The day after Thanksgiving signifies two very important things. First your stocked fridge tells you that turkey will be dinner for the next week. But second and more importantly it is the busiest and arguably the most profitable time for retailers in the United States. Yes you guessed it, the holiday Black Friday.
It is often considered the kickoff to the eventful sport of holiday shopping. The furthest parking spots from the door are taken, the lines are out or around the door, shopping enthusiasts bravely cement themselves to the ground hours before opening to ensure they will be taking home the advertised flat screen. All true signs that it’s the holidays. While Black Friday is considered the busiest day for retailers, it is not the highest sales volume day. Black Friday was coined long ago in what may feel like medieval times, when accounting records were kept by hand. Red ink indicated financial loss while black ink indicated profit. Popular financial phrases such as “in the red,” signify losing money and “in the black” means profitable.
So where do you go for great deals and prices? While the mall will host its selection of sales, the real bargains are stores like Target, Walmart, Kohl’s Best Buy, Toys R’ US, and K-mart. These stores are known to draw large crowds hours or even days before the annual Black Friday extravaganza. These stores, though times will vary with each store, usually open at 5 am or midnight depending on the region. So if you are feeling adventurous, digest that turkey well, tap a long Thanksgiving nap and set an alarm. These deals are not something worth hitting snooze for.
