Point Guard U Ranked Number One Recruiting Class in the Nation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Arizona chapter.

You guys all know who Sean Miller is right? That guy who coached us to victory against Duke and took us to the Elite 8 last year? Yeah that guy. I mean I guess it’s a pretty big deal to play for him. Maybe that’s why we have the number one recruiting class for the 2012-2013 season. Yes football fans, I know, basketball is forever away but we have got some amazing high school players committing to our school right now and I just want everyone to be as excited as I am. And let’s face it, we go to Point Guard U, basketballs our thing. According to ESPN Recruiting Nation were snagging up some talent and I’m sure none of you mind being greedy in this particular case.
As of now we’ve got 3 seniors committed to the U of A. Lucky for us all 3 of our recruits were at the Boost Mobile Elite 24 in Venice Beach about 2 weeks ago. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, the Elite 24 is an annual basketball invitational for the top 24 ranked high school players around the nation. For an idea of how talented these kids are, the game this year was delayed when player Mitch Mcgary (number one ranked power forward in the nation), shattered the backboard during a casual pre-game dunk. Impressive, but I still bet I could take him in a fight. Joking of course. Mcgary won’t be coming to our school but shooting guard Gabe York will be. York, who also had offers from Lousville, Washington, and Marquette has a reputation for a threatening outside shot as well as an ability to throw down (dunk). Though he has room for defensive improvement this impressive 6’1, 170 lb. player is ranked 9th best shooting guard in the nation and is clearly an exciting new recruit.
Another new face we’ll be seeing out on Mckale’s court is power forward Grant Jerrett. Jerrett is ranked the 9th best high school player in the country and it seems that the entire Pac-12 realized it. Jerrett received offers from both UCLA and USC. He also received an offer from ASU but let’s be real, why would he even take that offer seriously? That’s like saying Burger King offered me a job; not that cool bro. Glad to see Jerrett’s not only got talent, but clearly brains as well. Most exciting though is player Brandon Ashley and ranked 4th best player in the nation. Though he received offers from UCLA, Kentucky, and Oregon the power forward made a great decision in deciding to come to Arizona. Before he was even a senior Ashley led his high school to two back to back high school state championships. He also plays for the AAU team, Oakland Soldiers which is ranked number one in the country. Oakland Soldiers, sounds familiar right? That’s probably because both current U of A players, Nick Johnson and Josiah Turner, were Ashley’s former teammates on the Soldiers. How adorable, were going to have a little bromance reunion at McKale Center next year. But in all seriousness there’s nothing better than teammate chemistry on the court and former teammates are bound to have it. Ashley’s got a lot to offer to the team with his ability not only to hit outside jumpers but he’s armed with an aggressive driving skill and a number of post moves. The 6’8 hooper is an all around skilled player that we are more than happy to welcome to the team.
Though the cats already have 3 superb players lined up for the incoming class, were looking for one more recruit, preferably a center. With an extended offer to the 6th nationally ranked player, Kaleb Tarczewski of Claremont, let’s hope that the commitment of two fellow top 10 recruits will lead the center toward making the right decision. (Ahem, Arizona). All this talk of recruiting really makes me think of what a great job that must be. You basically hang out, watch sports, than pick from a buffet of (hot) athletes and try to persuade them, with your best A-game, to join you at your school. I wouldn’t mind being paid to do that. Seriously, I can’t wait to see these guys in there red and blue swag next year it’s going to be a beautiful sight to see.
