Rich Rod: Doin’ Work…Me: Not So Much

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Arizona chapter.

I literally hate the feeling of coming back to school and starting a new semester. We’ve been back almost a month and my life still feels like it’s in shambles. I just moved into a new house and all I have in my bedroom is a bed. That’s it. Goodness gracious I’m 21-years-old and I’m living out of a suitcase like some kind of homeless person. You go into my room and you would think furniture is against my religion or something.
Isn’t college supposed to be helping me learn independence and stability? Nope apparently not, lived on my own for three years now and still my life consists of ramen noodles, minimum wage, and stealing my roommate’s toothpaste because I cant afford my own. Somehow my dog eats better and swags around in better living conditions than me. (Dudes kennel is tricked out.) Oh you know what else is hilarious? I’m a Journalism major and my laptop is broken. Are you joking me? That’s what I get for buying a Dell.
It’s cool though, even though my life is laughable and completely undesirable due to my inability to GET IT TOGETHER, Rich Rod (UA’s new football coach you might have heard of him) has been making moves which is clearly way more than I can say for myself. Would not want to be him though during these last couple months. Despite being hired in November and given half the time a normal coach would have to recruit, Rod has already gotten 23 commitments for this upcoming season. Holler. (People still say that right?) Although Rodriguez didn’t even have a whole coaching staff, and he was hired while Arizona football is (no offense) kind of a joke, he’s recruiting like he’s the hot girl all the boys want to go to prom with.
After the disastrous season we had first semester that’s exactly what this school needs. (No, not a hot girl, but a good coach) Local recruits are good, but it says a lot about Rodriguez’s reputation as a recruiter when he’s getting commits outside this Southwest prison. (Kidding, I love this place.) He’s got players from New Orleans, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Philadelphia.
Some big names include defensive end, Kyle Kelly who turned down offers from Colorado, Florida, North Carolina State, Oklahoma, Utah and Washington. Oh yeah and ASU, but really? They suck so bad even we beat them this year. We also got linebacker, Dakota Conwell, the only four star recruit in UA’s recruiting class. Conwell, initially recruited by Pitt, stirred up a bit of controversy when he decided to attend UA instead. Tony Gibson, a previous member of Pitt’s coaching staff, was hired by Rich Rod and as of January 17th, successfully reached out to Conwell to join him. Aside from his relationship with “Coach Gibby”, Conwell’s dad, Dane Conwell, is also Rich Rod’s former teammate at West Virginia.
Still some time left to recruit during the signing period, but according to Rodriguez in an interview with the Wildcat, “we addressed our needs with this group, and it’s a solid class,” he said. “We signed guys who want to be part of this program.” I left a list of the recruits, read ‘em and weep ladies. If you want to Google the new recruits and check out their pictures I won’t judge. Just remember they’re seniors in high school and nobody wants to be THAT girl. Bear Down!
