This last Saturday marked the third weekend in a row the University of Arizona hosted a home game for the Wildcats football team. I don’t know about you guys, but after just one weekend of tailgating I’m ready to call it quits and sleep in for the next four days. There’s something aboutwaking up at 11 a.m. to party all day that just drains the brain cells out of your body. It’s one thing to start drinking at noon for a seven o’clock game, but its another thing when everyone expects you to go home and get cute so you can resume at night for your usual weekend go-outs.
Along with being able to hang all day, women are also encouraged to wear hand-made Arizona shirts, showing creativity and skin all at once; the shorter and frillier, the better. Me, being the least creative person on campus, have a hard time setting aside craft hour every week because gosh forbid you even think about repeating a game day shirt. The rule of thumb is to spend money on a nice shirt at the bookstore and go crazy with a pair of scissors and a $15 dollar bag of rhinestones from Michaels. All this hard work really pays off when you start tailgating and you sweat off the rhinestones, spill ketchup and burger grease all over your shirt, and ultimately stretch it out from being wet with beer all day long.
These are just the precursors leading to the actual game. The game itself is another room of difficulties. Every freshman is tricked into buying the Zona Zoo pass that only gets used if you don’t go tailgating. If you do, you will soon learn there is usually no way of actually making it to the game. Either you do not want to leave the party or you realize you cannot handle the never-ending responsibility of standing up throughout all four quarters.
Looking back at all the hurdles one goes through during tailgate season, you realize that it is actually worth it. And look at it this way, it is the only time you can go to a fraternity house without feeling obligated to wear heels. The dancing and walking down stairs suddenly don’t feel like Olympic sports anymore.
I think we can all agree that this next weekend we are in dire need for an away game. On the other hand all the students here can agree that there is nothing like a good old fashion ARIZONA TAILGATE!! Bear Down!
