19 Things Not to Do Your First Week At The UofA

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Arkansas chapter.

1. Do not step on the class of 1900 in front of Old Main. Rumor has it that those who step on this class will not graduate.

2. Do not bring a U-Haul to move into your dorm. You don’t need it, and your dorm won’t hold it all anyway.

3. Do not stomp about. The walls and floors of the dorms are thinner than you would expect. Stomping around and making loud noises is not a good way to make friends with your neighbors.

4. Do not be a recluse in your dorm. Enough said.

5. Do not eat the food in the communal fridges. You never know how long the food in question has been there.

6. Do not go to the fifth floor in Maple East. Not just the first week of school but ever. Don’t go there.

7. Do not propel yourself into doors. Some of the doors in the dorms are “skin sensitive”, and you must be physically touching the “push to open” bar. Throwing all your weight against the door will not open it.

8. Do not drive the wrong way in the Harmon Parking Garage. This is the kind of mistake you don’t think you’ll make until it’s too late.

9. Do not wear heels. If you are not used to wearing wedges or heels, don’t let the first week of class be your trial run. However, if you are used to walking in them, still wear with caution. Campus has hills and the occasional obstacle. Besides, no one wears heels to class anyway.

10. Do not run full speed to class. Coming into a class out of breath and flustered is much more disruptive than quietly walking in and taking a seat a few minutes late.

11. Do not trust the Kimpel elevators. It’s not that you shouldn’t ride them, but don’t be surprised if they stop at several unnecessary floors before picking you up and stop at a few extra ones on the ride just for good measure.

12. Do not be afraid to ask for help. Everybody gets lost on campus, and most people you come across are more than happy to point you in the right direction. If they don’t know either, bond over your confusion.

13. Do not refuse the free stuff. The first week on campus is a carnival of free things. Embrace your new college budget and accept all the free miniature deodorants you can.

14. Do not eat at just one dining hall. Each dining hall has its specialty. Try them all and figure out what those specialties are.

15. Do not overlook the sandwich line in Brough. The line may be long, but the wait may be worth it.

16. Do not use all your flex dollars at Einstein Bros Bagels. By all means please spend all your flex there just not all in the first week.

17. Do not drop a class on the first day. Every class has its good and bad days. Maybe the first day is just an off one. Give every class a second chance.

18. Do not go “out” every night. Hanging out with friends can become distracting. Just realize how much time you are spending on what.

19. Do not forget that your parents can’t bail you out. Your parents may not be able to ground you for anything, but they can’t run to your immediate rescue. Be careful with your new found freedom!
