Clear Your Mind: Hiking Style Basics

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ASU chapter.

The end of the semester means constantly tweeting #TeamNoSleep as you study overnight in Club Hayden, replacing all the time you spent procrastinating with bae (Netflix) with reading your books, and maybe even shedding a few tears thinking about those dreaded finals.

Although finals are an important finish to your semester, it doesn’t mean you have to spend these next two weeks cooped up with your highlighter and notes. Get outside and enjoy the warm temperatures of Arizona. Hike up ASU’s ‘A Mountain’ or Camelback before heading back home for the summer.

You’ll get some fresh air, exercise, a great view, and a feeling of accomplishment—something you might need for finals motivation. You could even do some studying while enjoying the scenery surrounding you. Plus, you might find that nature sounds way better than your snoring roommate.

Before taking the journey to hike a mountain, you’ll need to know what to wear.

Light, comfortable tank top

I recommend a light, comfortable tank top. It’s hot in Arizona, so you won’t want to regret wearing something thick or something you’ll have to end up carrying.

Athletic shorts or cropped leggings

Trust me. You probably won’t want to wear anything but one of these. They give you comfort without a hassle, and they won’t cause a chaffing problem when you’re only half of the way up.

Backpack

Yep, you’ll need one. The lighter the bag, the better. Plan on filling it with plenty of water and even a light snack, like trail mix or a protein bar.

Tennis shoes

This one’s pretty simple. Need I say more?

Taking a hike should be beneficial—clear your mind of all the stress you might be having and take time to really put the end of the semester in perspective.
