A new year calls for changes to your life, for better or for worse. Taking care of yourself may not seem like a big deal, or you may not think you need any changes, but often times you do. Make those changes ones that will positively impact your life with these self-care habits to pick up this year.

Drink Water

This may not seem like a big thing, but drinking water is so important! Get yourself a cute reusable water bottle and start with finishing one of those a day. Over time, start finishing multiple bottles a day. You can also add some lemon to your water to get that extra Vitamin C. Being hydrated has so many benefits! It makes you feel more energized, it helps clear your skin and it boosts your immune system!

Get Outside/Be Active

Nothing is better than getting some fresh air! I know how hard it is to get out of bed sometimes, but trust me, going outside for even a few minutes helps. Sometimes being cooped up in a tiny dorm/apartment all day isn’t so great. It is pretty cold in Auburn right now, so putting on a warm jacket and walking to get some coffee or a snack from the C-Store in the Student Center is great. Any form of exercise is good too! You can take a walk or do a short workout video from YouTube.

Take Breaks When You Need To

Sometimes school can be overwhelming. Deadlines for homework, exams and projects can weigh pretty heavily on your shoulders. When you get that feeling, know that it’s totally okay to take breaks. Whether that be to take a quick nap, take some deep breaths, do some neck rolls or stretch out your body, you’ll feel a lot better afterwards. Remember that your grades don’t define you as a person, and that you are valid no matter what your GPA says!

Journal

Journaling is a really good habit to get into this year. Do whatever you want with your journal: write down your feelings, write down what happened to you that day, write down manifestations for your life or use it as a sketchbook and doodle in it. By doing this, you’re working your brain and clearing your head of toxic thoughts and feelings.

Pamper Day

Try to take one day out of the week to pamper yourself. This includes: taking a long shower/bath, doing a face mask, doing your nails, watching your favorite movie, cooking your favorite meal, etc. Do something that makes you feel good! By doing this, you can start the next day fresh and new.
