Auburn’s Campus Celebrity this week is not in the picture below. Instead, she is the one behind the camera! Adrienne Hames, a sophomore at Auburn, shows that a picture truly is worth a thousand words.
Grade: Sophomore
Major: Secondary Education
When did you start getting into photography? When I was younger (about 7th grade) I was always the one taking pictures whenever a group would hang out, or when we went on trips. So I’ve loved taking pictures for awhile, but probably not until high school did I really get into it and love it.
Had you done anything artistically before that? I grew up in a family of artists. My mom sculpts, my sister paints, and I’m okay at drawing and painting, but graphic design and photography are kind of my strong points. I paint sets for theaters, so that is really the only painting that I have kept up with and consistently worked on.
Do you hope to make a career out of photography? Probably not, I want to be a teacher, and photography is kind of my escape. I feel like if I make it my career I risk losing my love for it in the craziness of the business aspect. I feel like it is going to be something I do on the side though.
Are there any other things that interest you besides photography? I do enjoy theater. One of my favorite things to photograph is people on stage. When you’re taking pictures of someone in a photo shoot they are only focused on how their hair is or if they are doing the right thing with their hands, but when you take pictures of people on stage they aren’t focused on you and you get their raw reactions. Along with taking pictures, I love working backstage. I love helping with hair and makeup, and dealing with the craziness. I also love painting sets for theater. It’s kind of my second love. I don’t like being on stage though [laughs]!
I also love working with teenagers and helping others, which is why I’m going into secondary education.
