The Crunch: Fig & Honey Milkshake

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Auburn chapter.

Freshmen, this one’s for you.

When I lived in a dorm, my kitchen involved a corner of the room with a mini-fridge, a microwave, two storage bins as a pantry (one for me and one for my roommate), and a blender. Lack of space and lack of stove render cooking a meal in a dorm almost impossible, inhibiting culinary creativity at the same time. Yes, this is why dining plans exist. But on-campus eating can grow repetitive, and even a cup of ramen is only satisfying a few nights per week.

In the typical dorm-room pantry, figs are most likely to be found wrapped in a soft cookie, reduced to the consistency of jam. I’m not asking you to replace your Fig Newtons with fresh fig desserts year round, but figs are currently at their prime and deserve some extra attention.

The crunch of walnuts and warm cinnamon flavor combine with the distinct taste of fresh figs to create this ideal late summer dessert. Savor the last moments of the season, and maximize the capabilities of your dorm-room kitchen with a fig and honey milkshake.

Fig & Honey Milkshake

Serves 1

1 cup cinnamon ice cream

1/4 cup milk

1 tablespoon honey

3 fresh figs, halved

1/8 teaspoon kosher salt

Walnuts, optional

Combine ice cream, milk, honey, figs and salt in a blender until smooth. Top with walnuts, and garnish with figs, honey and cinnamon.
