Sydney Gurock is a sophomore in business at Auburn University from Princeton, New Jersey. She plays guitar and sings—but not only is she a musician, Gurock makes her own shirts.

She sells the shirts from her Instagram page, @get_laced_by_sg. The Auburn shirts are $35. You can also give her an old shirt to transform for $15, and the sweatshirts are $20. Gurock says she just started doing sweatshirts over winter break. She has also been doing a lot of band t-shirts.
Gurock says she got her inspiration for the shirts when she found a website with the same type of shirts for $100, which she didn’t want to pay. So, instead, she decided to make one herself.
She says that she made her first shirt for the LSU game, and her friends were asking if she could make them and then it just “blew up.”
Gurock says that her main customers are sorority girls because they see her shirts the most, but now she’s getting more followers.
She says she’s done a couple of shipments to Nashville for music festivals. She also says that a girl from Popstar magazine reached out to her and she sent her a shirt. Gurock said she is hopeful that people in New York will start wearing her shirts as well.
Gurock also says she sees her business going far. She didn’t think she would be shipping her shirts out to people, but now it’s starting to happen. She also she made her cousin who works at MTV a shirt, so she’s hopeful that her cousin will wear it to work and people ask about it.
Gurock’s cousin was a journalism major at Binghamton University. She was also a part of Her Campus while in school. Gurock says that when her cousin was in school, she and a friend began making Youtube videos.
She wanted to delete the videos but someone from the cast of Teen Wolf saw the videos and flew her and her friend to New York. Gurock said her cousin stayed in touch with MTV.
Gurock doesn’t go to Hobbly Lobby like most DIYers—she goes to Michael’s for her supplies. She also says making the shirts takes more than expected.
“It’s honestly a long process but it’s worth it. It’s a lot of sewing,” says Gurock.
Sewing isn’t a problem, Gurock said, because she’s always loved fashion.
“I love fashion. I think it’s so fun. I love seeing what everyone wears, it’s awesome,” says Gurock.
She said when she was younger she wanted to go to FIDM in Los Angeles, California, but her mom said she couldn’t. Now she wonders:
“If I went into fashion what if I didn’t get a job?” says Gurock.
She also said that because of this, she decided to major in business marketing or analytics.
“But I can still do fashion on the side,” says Gurock.
Gurock also said she has a few ideas coming up for the shirts. One thing she is sure of is that she’s going to have more customers during football season so she might begin doing presale orders.
“Just so I can get them done over the summer and then come back, and people would have them,” says Gurock.
Gurock enjoys what she is doing and said, “Just do what you love, it’s fun.”
