We’ve all been there- somehow, you and your single self end up spending an unfortunate amount of time with a friend and her man piece. You witness all of the awkward hand holding, the flirty couple-y staring, and if you’re really lucky, they’ll suck face right in front of you. So great. So much fun.

You’re the third wheel, the unnecessary presence that makes the entire hangout time awkward. If you’re doing it the wrong way, you’ll end up with a mushy gushy reminder of how being single kind of sucks and a permanent image of your friend and her man making out burned into your brain for the rest of eternity.

As a highly experienced third wheeler (for example, I am writing this blog post while stuck in a car for 4 hours with my roommate and her boyfriend), I hate third wheeling just as much as the next girl. But, your third-wheeling experience doesn’t have to suck so badly. Often, the awkwardness is not as bad as you make it out to be!

Just kidding, being the third wheel sucks so much. But here are some ways to make it suck less!

Channel Ted Mosby

Ted doesn’t give a crap if he’s intruding in the sacred ground of a relationship- he just makes up a way to force himself in between the couple and make sure he is not forgotten in the midst of their love.

Channel Raj Koothrapali

In The Big Bang Theory, Raj makes his friends put their relationship above that of his girlfriend, always bringing up couple-y plans they made and hinting at their intense bromance. Do that in your third-wheel situation- demand all the attention of your friend so they don’t have enough time to make you a third wheel.

Channel Harry Potter

In The Deathly Hallows movies, Harry practically ignores the fact that Ron and Hermione’s relationship is blossoming into more than just friends. He’s always hovering during their intimate moments, and the couple is acutely aware of it. Do that, so they have no choice but to pay attention to you instead of paying attention to making you feel so intensely awkward.

Channel TigerMakeout

The people in these photos are living their life with complete disregard for the people they’re third-wheeling, and taking advantage of the situation to get yourself internet famous!
