The Last Four Words of the Gilmore Girls Revival Justified in Four Words

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Auburn chapter.

Since 2007, Gilmore Girls fans have had to walk around with the bothered feeling that season 7 episode 22 left us with. No closure and no hope in sight. All we could do was binge watch the seasons on Netflix and reassure ourselves the Lorelai and Rory were happy, drinking unhealthy amounts of coffee a day and fast-talking in the charming Stars Hollow for years to follow. So, obviously, the announcement of the Gilmore Girls Revival was the best thing since Gretchen Weiner’s dad created Toaster Strudel.

You watched. You laughed at Kirk’s second film, cried with Emily Gilmore, and drooled over Rory’s parade of hot exes. Then, the last four words.

It’s okay to feel confused. It’s okay to be disappointed—you waited a year for this. It’s okay to be sad or nostalgic or angry. I’m here to tell you why, despite our immediate desire to tweet angry things at Amy Sherman-Palladino, the ending is actually thematically perfect.

Here are the four words that hopefully can help you during this dark time.

Jess is Rory’s Luke.

In case you actually have a life and haven’t finished the series yet and love spoiling things for yourself, the final four words of the Winter episode were

“Mom?”

“Yeah.”

“I’m pregnant.”

Jaw. drop.

Then the show cuts to the credits because OF COURSE.

Now that I have had time to calm down, it all makes sense. Which makes me even angrier, because it’s perfect. I am not the girl that likes when things are up for the imagination. I don’t care if it would be too cheesy or obvious for Rory and Jess to end up together. I wasn’t asking for such thematic excellence—I wanted corny.

Now, take a deep breath and remind yourself,

Jess is Rory’s Luke.

Amy Sherman-Palladino, we see what you did there. Yep, we are going full circle with this one. Lorelai got pregnant at an inopportune time with Christopher, an immature wealthy guy not ready for the commitment. We’re going to assume that Rory’s child is Logan’s, the engaged, charming, rich ex-bf (Still a jerk, but still so hot), making her scenario very similar to Lorelai’s. Like Mother, like Daughter.

Earlier in the Winter episode, Rory goes to see her father to get his permission about the book she is writing… at least that is what we are supposed to think. In reality, she was visiting him to try to understand why he didn’t stick around to help Lorelai raise her. Logan will most likely react in the same way Christopher did, and immediately offer her the best: marriage and money.

So why don’t we think she is going to marry Logan and have adorable blue-eyed babies sporting Yale sweaters? Well, Jess’s lingering, yearning stare. That 15-second stare is the most important part of the 6 hours of the new series. After Luke teases him about still having feelings for Rory, in comes the long stare at Rory through her window. Jess may not admit it, but he totally still loves her (and we love you, Jess!). However, Rory has now made her own love trifecta. Logan is Rory’s Christopher and Jess is her Luke. So, yes, we are disappointed and we are desperately demanding another season or another episode—we would even settle for a simple tweet with some answers. But at least we can go to bed tonight assuming that Jess and Rory are end game. Congrats, Team Jess shippers! You won. Sorta.

….Not to completely ruin this for everyone, but isn’t this is a little odd since Luke, Jess’s uncle, just married Rory’s mom?

Thus, making them related???!! Thoughts, comments, concerns?
