To celebrate the launch of DoSomething.org’s new campaign, “The Craziest Thing I Did to Save Money,” the HC Auburn Team was willing to share a few tips.
The first tip is to submit YOUR story to DoSomething.org for a chance to win a $4,000 scholarship!
Â
Team Member 1: “I offered to wear my hair in cornrows for a week to earn money.”
HC Auburn says: Ouch! There are easier ways!
Â
Try this tip from DoSomething.org:
“Save one-third of any money you receive to create a cushion for your future. Use a visual tool like a piggy bank or money jar to help reinforce saving habits.”
Â
Team Member 2: “My roommate dared me to eat a chicken nugget soaked in a chocolate frosty for money. She also dared me to dance behind random people for money.”
HC Auburn says: Well that doesn’t sound too bad, but we’ve got a better idea and you won’t be known as the one-girl flash mob on campus!
Â
Try this tip from DoSomething.org:
“Pack a lunch instead of eating out. Saving a few dollars at each meal will add up in the long run, helping you to buy other items you crave.”
Â
Team Member 3: “Avoided buying textbooks unless absolutely necessary.”
HC Auburn says: We understand this one perfectly! But try checking out used books on chegg.com or eBay. You can also use a copy of many textbooks in the library or try Boundless, the free alternative to buying textbooks.
Â
Team Member 4: “I’ve sold my clothes and some of my mom’s to a consignment store.”
HC Auburn says: This is a HC Auburn approved idea! If you have clothing or shoes that you rarely wear, take it to a store like Plato’s Closet and get an estimate of what they would pay you. If you are not satisfied with the total, try selling the individual items on eBay! It is easy and free to list and items like cute shoes, tops, hoodies and jeans are likely to sell!
Â
Team Member 5: “Refused to go to the doctor for illnesses.”
HC Auburn says: Uh oh! This is actually dangerous and may cause your illness to worsen and land you in the hospital!
Â
Luckily, DoSomething.org has you covered, check out this tip:
“Be prepared for emergencies. Start a fund to cover at least six months of bills such as car insurance, cell phone, gas and food.”

We hope you enjoyed our team’s helpful, (and maybe not-so helpful), tips to save money. Head over to DoSomething.org/crazy to get started sharing your own story!
