Just as it happens every year, the inevitable winter is quickly approaching and with that brings shorter days and gloomy skies. Although for some people the winter months are seen as the beginning of the holiday season, for others it is the time for the “winter blues” in which your mental and physical health starts taking a toll on you. In this season especially it is more important than ever to take time out of your day to make sure you are taken care of and that your health and well-being are both in good places.

It is no secret that college is very hard, that much is clear, but despite what feels like neverending piles of homework assignments and responsibilities constantly coming up, it is also essential that you are checking in with yourself as well and taking time out of your busy schedule to do something that you enjoy. Although I for one understand that it can be rewarding to finish assignments ahead of schedule, it is increasingly difficult to produce work that accurately reflects your academic abilities if you are not giving yourself breaks from responsibilities and time to breathe. A stressed-out brain will not have your back in producing high-quality school work and will struggle to pay attention to your additional assignments any longer.

This is why after focusing on your homework for a few hours and finishing an assignment or two, you must take a step back and make sure you have had something to eat that day. On top of nourishment, you must also make sure that you are staying hydrated. Drinking water consistently throughout the day is a great way to take care of yourself and feel rejuvenated. Afterwards, take a short nap, go for a walk around your neighborhood, or watch a few episodes of your favorite TV show. The most important part to remember is that you are not using breaks to procrastinate, but are instead using them to recharge your brain and your energy levels. Doing anything that gives your brain a break and brings you joy is important for your overall well-being and your mental health. Other strategies to take time for yourself during the long winter days include taking long and hot showers, reading a book, watching movies with your friends or family, baking warm treats or cooking homemade meals, and cozying up with a cup of hot chocolate.

Although it is inevitable that winter months approach and dwell for what feels like forever, it is also so important to remember that they will not last forever. The gloominess and bitter cold do not stick around for too long before the sun will begin to shine yet again. The winter can be very hard to get through, but you must never forget that eventually it will end and the warm months will bring back the sunshine. Cheers to making yourself a priority this winter!
