Either you love it or you hate it. That’s how it is with “The Bachelor/Bachelorette” T.V. series. Whenever I ask people about their opinion on ABC’s iconic and seemingly timeless series, “The Bachelor/Bachelorette” I seem to hear responses such as, “Of course, I love that show and am devoted to watching it” to “Why would you ever watch that show, it’s so stupid.” There is really no in between the slew of responses I have received, and that’s why I am going to shamelessly admit that I, as a twenty-year-old business college student-athlete, love watching “The Bachelor/Bachelorette”. And, whatever your preconceived notions are on these controversial series, I may just give you a few reasons to change your mind about “The Bachelor/Bachelorette”.
The only reason I started watching “The Bachelor/Bachelorette” was because I would watch it with one of my best friends after classes and our sports practice. We would watch the show on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night after it already aired on Monday night as our reward for a hard week of the crazy-busy life we lead as college students. Watching “The Bachelor/ Bachelorette” was something I would so look forward to because it was a mindless escape that requires little attention span and thinking. It is the perfect route of escapism for a college student. And sometimes, a world away from responsibilities is all you need.
Of course, “The Bachelor/Bachelorette” is filled with many shallow ideals, assumptions, and actions, but that is how the show is intended, and that is where the entertainment comes from. Having the ability to laugh at pointless drama and make comments about contestant’s actions is the majority of the fun that comes from watching “The Bachelor/Bachelorette” with a friend. What’s the fun in watching a show that is so laughably ridiculous if you don’t have company to do it with?
And, finally, watching “The Bachelor/Bachelorette” has made me realize that actual true love and the process behind it is truly valuable. While I am only a Sophomore in college and have yet to find anything close to true love, I believe that “The Bachelor/Bachelorette” has taught me that love should be sincere and natural, and not used for entertainment purposes.
I can definitely say that I have a love-hate relationship with “The Bachelor/Bachelorette” because sometimes, I hate that I love it. Having found escapism and humor within the show while simultaneously being able to have endless laughs and further connect and bond with my best friend is something that I have “The Bachelor/Bachelorette” to thank for.
