This week, HCB’s campus celeb was nominated by a friend who claimed that his nominee “is a model student, great dresser, fantastic partier, and is well-known for his ridiculous laugh.” After this enticing nomination, we couldn’t resist interviewing the well-spoken and friendly senior Nick Luther!

Name: Nick Luther
Â
Grade: Senior
Â
Hometown: Concord, MA Â Â
Â
Major: Economics
Â
What you are writing your thesis about:
I am writing my thesis about income inequality in the homosexual community. Prior to 2013, the United States Census did not collect data that allowed individuals to distinctly classify themselves as homosexual. Because of this, the previous studies have flawed methods of determining sexual orientation. A study of this sort has never been conducted before; itâs pretty fascinating, something Iâm passionate about and hope to get published.
Â
Place you live on campus:
I actually donât live on campus, I live at 210 College Street, or more commonly known as âWhite House.â
Â
How your friends would describe you:
I would hope that they would describe me as nice, fun, humorous, and compassionate, but most likely they would describe me as blunt, and always anxious â I canât say theyâre wrong.
Â
Â
What you are involved with on campus:
I am involved on campus through the Office of Admission as a Senior Admission Fellow and as the Co-President and Co-Founder of the Bobcat Consulting Group, a student-run organization that provides voluntary consulting services to NGOâs in the Lewiston/Auburn area.
Â
Hobbies and interests:
Definitely the on-campus organizations I am involved in. I also have a huge passion for Intramural Sports, specifically Broomball (reigning intramural champions) and Softball. Which leaves me to say, create a Broomball team â weâd love to play you. I also really like architecture and real estate – you can often find me and my friend and fellow student, Jackson Moore, in heated debates concerning the topic. Aside from that, hanging out with friends until the late hours of the night.
Â
Best type of music:
I couldnât put my finger on the best type of music, but I would certainly say that it is without a doubt not heavy rock or death metal â I think thatâs pretty unanimous. My favorite band right now is âHonneâ
Â
Favorite movie:
My favorite movie as of late would be âA Game of Honorâ â excellent propaganda
Â
Movie that makes you cry:
The most recent movie that made me cry was âThe Fault in Our Starsâ â extremely clichĂ©, but pulls at the heart strings nonetheless.
Â
Â
Â
Where you see yourself in 20 years:
I will hopefully have lived some adventurous years prior to being 41. I will have found a career I really enjoy and have been very passionate about my work and have done well within the professional sphere. I will have my own company and be my own boss. I definitely see myself having a family and kids, but thatâs after Iâve been free to do things that family and children hinder (âIf you have kids, you have nothingâ â my beautiful grandmother).
Â
Dream job:
Probably a real estate developer, both commercial and residential.
Â
Thing you are most looking forward to in the winter semester:
Winter Carnival, specifically my last winter puddle jump and Newman Day â I have a good feeling about my odds this year.
Â
What you feel most passionate about:
Aside from my thesis, Iâd say I am most passionate about social issues and world affairs in general. Both of these topics typically dominate discussion in Commons among my friends.
Â
Pet peeves:
People who do not know how to navigate commons in an efficient manner, people who are really loud when they eat, people who post anything and everything to social media, and that one kid in class who asks a question 30 seconds before class ends and forces everyone to leave minutes late as a result, and couples who sit on the same side of the booth when there is no one on the other side â make me feel worse about myself, I dare you.
Â
Â
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?:
I would probably rent an RV of some sort and travel all around Southeast Asia with my friends after graduation and before work starts next fall. I think it would be cool to experience such a different culture and try and navigate an unfamiliar world with the best travel companions.
Â
Your favorite Bates memory:
My favorite Bates memory took place on my first day of AESOP. My best friend, Josh Giesler, and I had just met and we were in the same canoe on Squam Lake. During our travel from the loading dock to our first campsite, the water got really rough and our leaders thought it would be a good time to discuss safety with us in the middle of lake. Next thing Josh and I knew, we were pushed up against rocks and our boat was sinking and all of our food and supplies were overboard. Some would call it a near-death experience, however we lived to tell the tale.
Â
Best part about living in Maine for four years:
Definitely experiencing all four seasons. There is always something to do in the great outdoors of Maine. Aside from the plethora of activities, itâs just a beautiful place.
Â
Celebrity friendship crush:
Ansel Elgort, he made me cry in the âFault in Our Stars,â Iâd like to meet him in person, and based on his Instagram, and if he is anything like he is in the movie, he could certainly take me on a nice outing.
Â
Something that no one knows about you:
I am related to John Hancock.
Â
Tastiest food youâve ever had:
Any late-night food is the best food. My favorite normal-hour dish however would have to be Thai food or Sushi.
Â
Â
Best place to study on campus:
Definitely in one of the luxurious Roger Williams or Hedge lounges. If you can control one of those for a day during finals, youâre golden.
Â
Favorite quote:
âNever take life too seriously, nobody gets out alive anyway.â
Â
Final words of wisdom for other Batesies:
Take advantage of everything Bates has to offer while you can â donât wait until Senior year, you will seriously regret it.
