As college ladies (and gentlemen!), we are always looking for ways to improve our appearance. We all strive for that luscious looking, healthy hair. While there are many expensive remedies regarding hair repair, you can find some of the most natural, effective ones in your own fridge!

1. The Mayo Hair Mask – Best for Dry Hair and Split Ends

This mask is ultimately the BEST one that I have done on my own hair. What you want to do is get a small bowl in order to mix all of your ingredients in. Mix in one cup of mayonnaise (any kind works) and 1-2 teaspoons of olive oil (any kind as well). I like to apply the concoction into completely dry hair. However, some may prefer to dampen their hair a bit using a brush. I left this mask on for about 30 minutes, but you may go longer if hair is completely dry or has a lot of split ends. After that, wash your hair like normal using shampoo and conditioner. After letting my hair air dry, I noticed that the split ends were gone and I had a head full of softness! My hair is already naturally soft and manageable, so if you don’t see a reduction of split ends, don’t be alarmed! It can take a couple of tries before long lasting results. Additionally, this tip will make your hair shine!

2. Egg and Olive Oil Mask – For Brittle Hair

This next mask gave wonderful results. You need a bowl, 1 egg yolk, 2 tablespoons of aloe vera, and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Mix well and apply to dry hair. Using a comb to brush through your hair will allow the mixture to spread evenly. Leave it on for about 30 minutes and wash your hair like normal. While all the results are different, my hair was extremely soft and very manageable after my shower.

3. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has many benefits not only for our health, but for our beauty as well. For my hair, I utilize unrefined, organic coconut oil. I apply no specific amount to my hair and leave it on for 1 hour (I also attempted leaving the coconut oil on overnight, but I only recommend this if your hair is extremely dry and brittle). After the coconut oil has been in your hair for about an hour, apply a small, quarter-sized amount of shampoo directly into your hair before getting in the shower. This will help the oil come out better. After, wash your hair like normal and even apply more shampoo if necessary. Disclaimer: Leaving the oil on for too long, including overnight, will make the hair extremely oily.

4. Cool Water

Rinsing your hair off with cool water is better for your hair’s overall health rather than using steaming, hot water. Utilizing cool water will help your hair cuticles remain smooth.

5. No Heat!

The best advice that I can give is to not use a lot of heat on your hair. Try to air dry as much as you can. If you are using heat, use a heat protector that you trust in order to keep your hair healthy!

The secret to great hair is not $200 shampoo or silicone-based “hasks.” You can get silky, smooth hair with household products found in your fridge. That mayo is good for more than just sandwiches! Hair care is important, so make sure you are pampering those follicles as much as needed, and you’ll thank me later.
