The bitter New England winter is about to commence. Hopefully you have all of the clothing you need to get to class safely, but do you have the right lip balm?
5. Baby Lips
Price: $3-5
Where to Buy: Wherever Maybelline is sold
These SPF 20 balms come in a range of tints and scents. The formula is light, non-waxy, and non-sticky. It moisturizes well, but you’ll need to apply a lot to protect yourself against a bitter winter breeze. The cap slips off easily, so store this in a makeup pouch instead of a tiny backpack pocket. Although it might not be the best if you need a thick layer or don’t like the taste of SPF, Baby Lips is the ideal light and tasty tinted lip balm.
4. Nivea
Price: Under $4
Where to Buy: Drugstores, Superstores
Nivea’s Kiss of Moisture balm works wonders for extremely chapped lips. If your lips are broken and you fear leaving your dorm in the morning for lack of moisture, Nivea has your back. Nivea absorbs very quickly and would make a great layer under Burt’s Bees. Like Baby Lips, Nivea balms come in an array of tints and scents. Nivea balms absorb slightly better than Baby Lips, but your lips won’t feel cushy after a few minutes.
3. Other Smith’s Balms
Price: $6-8
Where to Buy: Sephora, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, and online
Strawberry, Brambleberry, Mocha Rose, Minted Rose, or Menthol and Eucalyptus? How about all of the above? The specialty varieties have the same basic formulation as the original, but you might just like their flavor or color better. The Strawberry balm smells like candy, and the mint version is a little more tinted and refreshing. The Menthol and Eucalyptus salve is too strongly scented to use on the lips, but it does wonders for razor burn or tired cuticles. If you liked the original Rosebud Salve, you’ll probably find something to love in this lot, too.
2. Burt’s Bees:
Price: Under $4
Where to Buy: Anywhere? It seems ubiquitous.
Burt’s Bees lip balm is a classic for a reason. It works. This very waxy and protectant balm seals out winter and locks in moisture. It doesn’t, however, actually moisturize your lips. If you have lips chapped to the point where your skin is broken, this isn’t going to help, but this is a great outer layer. Also, stick to the original. Trendy varieties just aren’t as good. Accept it. So should you buy it? Only if you can’t find the one you know you have.

1. Smith’s Rosebud Salve
Price: $6-8
Where to Buy: Sephora, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters
If you haven’t experienced the wonder that is Smith’s Rosebud Salve, get thee to a retailer. The retro-glam tin (or tube!) is filled with a waxy yet smooth pink goo. It goes on practically clear and with a faint rose scent. It’s heavy enough to wear in the winter, makes a perfect before-bed balm, and is cushy but not at all sticky. Rosebud Salve can be worn as a gloss or balm depending on how much you apply, but it is also wonderful above lip stains. Definitely buy it, but be warned: it’s addictive.Â
