5 Ways for Busy College Students to Stay Informed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

We can all agree that it is very important for people to be informed about their governments, their societies, their countries, and the people of the world. But for college students, there are so many other things to worry about and to focus on during the day. In order to help all of us become a little bit more informed, here are some EASY ways to learn about what’s going on in the world:

1. Sign up for tweet notifications from your favorite news site

This is one of my favorite ways to stay updated. If you go to the twitter app on your phone, search for your favorite news site, and go to their account page, you can tap the icon that looks like a bell with a plus sign next to it. By tapping on this icon, you’ll then have to select the “all tweets” option, and you’re done! You’ll now get notifications whenever your news site tweets or retweets anything at all. And how easy is it to check a notification on your home screen? (Very easy).

2. Sign up for theSkimm

I only recently signed up for theSkimm and I absolutely love it already. It’s so simple. If you go online to https://www.theskimm.com/ and enter your email, you’ll be automatically signed up to receive a condensed, concise, and clear summary of some of the biggest news stories from around the world. You’ll get an email each morning with new stories. Who doesn’t love starting each day feeling like an informed citizen?

3. Get emails from Morning Brew

If you’re like me, you know nothing about the economy and have a hard time understanding or participating in conversations that have anything to do with it. Morning Brew is a great solution to this problem! Similar to theSkimm, if you head on over to their website https://www.morningbrew.com/ and put your email in, you’ll subscribe and get an email every morning about financial and economic news. I’ll definitely be signing up for this one.

4. Utilize the News app on your phone

You know how when you swipe to the left on your home screen, you eventually get to the screen with the calendar widget, upcoming alarm alerts, and other types of information? Well, the News app is one of those categories on the screen and, honestly, it is a great way to stay informed. And it’s right on your phone!!! How much easier can it get? You’ll see previews of breaking news and you can click on the article to read it in full. The app has a great collection of top stories from numerous news sources. It’s a great – and very convenient – way to stay on top of current events.

5. Chat with informed friends

If you have any friends who love politics, world events, breaking news, or staying informed… chat with them about things that are going on in the world! These people are great resources you can use to ask for clarifications, explanations, or updates about things happening around you. Use these people to your advantage! What are friends for, anyway?

Hopefully you can use some of these ideas to mix a couple of current events into your talking points. Of course, you can always tune into your nightly news channel, too, but what’s the fun in that? Good luck!
