All About Love Your Body Week!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

With exams, Late Night mozz sticks, and our busy daily schedules, it can be hard to remember to love your body. Not only that, but with the classic BC stereotype of perfect bodies and faces, it can be hard to be as gentle with ourselves and our bodies as we should.

The Women’s Center is hosting Love Your Body week from Monday, November 9th to Friday, November 13th. The week is full of programs dedicated to promoting healthy body image and healthy relationships with our bodies – from discussing race, class, and gender to the media’s influence on body image, Love Your Body week shows us our relationship with our bodies is not just skin-deep.

Monday kicks off with a program called “Embodied Stories”, and features portraits by the ever-talented Benjamin Flythe ’16. The reception is a forum of shared experiences of Boston College students.

Tuesday focuses on racial stereotypes and the effects they have on our body image and perception of perfection. The first program is a talk held by Professor Frederick on “Forms and Functions of the Black Female Body,” and the evening features a program exploring the experiences of colorism and the ideals we attach to people of various races. This program, titled “Skin Deep,” is co-hosted by the Women’s Center and the ALC Faces Council.

Wednesday’s program is about quite the hot-button issue, especially after Essena O’Neil’s controversial post about the ‘fakeness’ of social media: The Naked Truth: Advertising Images of Women, hosted by Jean Kilbourne. Definitely check this one out – I’m sure it will really resonate with BC students.

Thursday sounds like a fun time, and you’ll definitely see me at Embrace Your Body Through Yoga at the Plex at 6pm! Also at 6 (darn, I wanted to go to this too!) is a talk by Professor Mahalik on Does Size Matter? (No shame leaving one early to make it to both!)

Friday ends the thought-provoking week full of programs with Embodied Expression with Paint at 3pm (definitely want to check this one out!). Later in the evening, the week concludes with Good Body, a forum of reflection on the week and a final evaluation of our relationship with our bodies.

For ALL you BC beauties (read: all of you! Each and every single one of you.), I can’t wait to reflect with you and reconnect with myself at the same time.

Check out the Women’s Center webpage for more information! Her Campus BC cannot wait to attend all the events of “Love Your Body” week!
