I would not label myself as particularly religious, but when people ask me about BC’s environment, I do not hesitate to talk about the school’s Jesuit ideals. I think that being a Jesuit institution is an integral part of Boston College. Along with services and masses for those who do belong to a faith community, I find there are many reasons why I love going to a Jesuit school.
1. Education of the whole person
Many people complain about the Core Curriculum. Yes, it is daunting when you first realize how many requirements you must fulfill to graduate. The aim of Boston College, however, is to reach out to all aspects of humanity in all disciplines. Maybe you’re not the best science student, but being exposed to science will help you think in a different way. Theology may not be important to many people, but understanding the faith of the school and the faith of other nations is important to understanding how the world works.
2. Men and women for others
BC fosters a community that is truly engaged in service. Whether it is large groups like 4Boston or smaller service trips, one can find a way to help others through BC’s resources. I love that even though community service is not required, most students take this opportunity to help people and communities less fortunate than their own.
3. Reflection
Trips like 48 Hours and Halftime give students a chance to reflect on their college experience and further find themselves in an intimate way. Many colleges and universities do not offer this type of reflection. As part of the Jesuit, Catholic tradition, it is important to not only engage the mind through education, but also to engage the soul through reflection.
