Dear HC BC,
I just finished my first semester as a freshman at BC, and I have a problem.  I knew BC was kind of a party school when I applied, but now I am the only girl in my group of friends who doesn’t drink.  I like to go to parties and have fun, but it can be so awkward at times.  I don’t like having to babysit my friends, and they get mad when I try to tell them not to do things when they’re drunk.  How should I handle this situation?
Sober Sally
Dear Sober Sally,
This can be tricky, but good for you for sticking to your comfort zone!  At the end of the day, you have to make decisions that will make you happy, and if that means not drinking, stick to it.  Making friends freshman year can be really difficult, but this is a good test to see who your true friends are.  If someone really cares about you, they won’t mind that you don’t drink, and they definitely won’t try to make you do anything that makes you uneasy. Â
The best advice I can give you in this situation would be to do what makes you feel comfortable, but to also accept that your friends drink and not be judgmental about it.  As long as your friends aren’t doing anything dangerous or seriously reputation damaging, you should consider letting them do their own thing. In regards to “babysitting,” girls should definitely keep an eye our for their friends, but that has nothing to do with sobriety.  Watch out for them, but don’t go overboard. You might think dance floor make outs are trashy, but your friend could be totally fine with it. Talk to your friends as a group and have everyone set their ground rules. That way you won’t feel bad interfering when you do, and it will definitely reduce the regrets on Sunday morning. Bottom line: don’t ever do something that makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable and remember that if you want them to accept your decisions, you have to accept their decisions.
Good luck!
XO,
HCBC
