This past Monday night, the BC Men’s Hockey Team did what no BC team has done before: win four consecutive Beanpot titles. At the TD Garden, the Eagles outscored the Northeastern Huskies 6-3, including an exciting second period and a nail-biter of a third period. This feat also means that BC seniors have witnessed a Beanpot win in all of their years at BC. Despite the performances of other sports teams these past four years, the seniors have always been able to count on hockey to come through.
BC Seniors!
The game began at 7:30, as BC students were still trickling into the TD Garden. The first period ended with no scoring, but the two student sections had a bit of a cheer battle. The “Jesus Loves Us” cheer always seems to quiet the opposition down, because of course, Jesus does indeed love us.
The first half of the second period was much of the same. While BC had many opportunities, there were a couple of shots off the crossbar that left the student section wondering if the puck would ever get in. And at roughly the ten-minute mark, Bill Arnold knocked one in to put BC up by one, quickly followed by another goal by Johnny Gaudreau. Unfortunately, those pesky Huskies scored a short while later, but the Eagles were able to finish the period 4-1 after goals by Patrick Brown and Steve Whitney.
The third period made me the most anxious, at the Huskies came within one goal early. But Gaudreau sealed it up for the Eagles with five minutes left, and Pat Mullane added an empty netter to widen the gap. Husky fans began to leave, and obviously the BC student section gave them a lovely farewell.
This was my third time attending the Beanpot, and there’s nothing like celebrating with a huge crowd of Eagles’ fans. Most of the BC crowd stayed well after the end of the game to watch the trophy presentation. And I haven’t told you one of the best parts yet: BU lost in the consolation game. To Harvard. (Sorry, guys)
