Have you ever ventured into the city for a night of fun only to find yourself ending the night early due to the MBTA’s imposed curfew of 1 a.m.? Have you ever decided to visit your friends from other schools in the city or head to one of MIT’s frats (I’m looking at you freshman, we’ve all been there though) only to be forced to race back to catch the last train home? For the sophomores, juniors, and seniors, it’s like being transported back to your days on Newton, but even then your curfew was at least 2 a.m. and if need be you could walk home to extend your Friday night.
Well, the MBTA has FINALLY caught on to this dilemma that plagues many college students and other Boston residents come the weekend. The MBTA is now looking (let’s be honest they have been looking into this for years) implementing a 1-year trial period in which they will run all subway trains and 15 of the most popular bus routes until 3 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Yes, you read that correctly, the long awaited extended T hours are finally going to happen!
The pilot program will begin in either March 2014 or April 2014 and the last train would be scheduled to leave the city at 2:30 a.m. As of now they have decided to keep the cost the same, but if the program becomes popular they are considering raising the cost to $3.00 per ride. Whoa MBTA, let’s not get ahead of ourselves and please remember that we poor college students can barely afford the T to begin with.
With the MBTA finally looking to expand Boston’s nightlife, hopefully bars and restaurants will catch on next and pretty soon we may become more like the city that never sleeps, New York, but with nicer people (sorry New York people, but it’s true).
