We’ve all heard it before—cardio for calories and weights for strength. When it comes to fitness, should you opt for a run around the Res or a sculpt class at the Plex? Here is a a rundown on the cardio versus strength training!
Cardio exercise is any exercise that raises your heart rate like running or taking a spin class. Not only does cardio scorch calories, but it is also a super stress reliever (cough cough midterm season!) Just 15 minutes of aerobic activity two to three times a week can reduce anxiety by significant amounts.
Additionally, a recent Duke University study found that minute per minute, cardio indisputably burns more calories than strength training, which could explain why compared to strength trainers, aerobic exercisers lose more weight in less time.
Still, cardio doesn’t do much for your muscle. Weight training builds lean muscle mass, which elevates your metabolism and burns more fat, even when you’re not exercising. Strength training can help you lose body fat and is likely a quicker ticket to better fitness than just plain cardio exercises.
Lifting weights gives you a metabolic spike for an hour after a workout because your body is trying hard to help your muscles recover. That means you’ll fry an additional 25 percent of the calories you just scorched during your strength session.
So, what’s the verdict? Aim for a fitness plan that includes both cardio and strength training. Find a fitness routine that works for you and stick with it!
