Celebrate Love Year Round!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Oh Valentine’s Day. Some people hate it, some people love it, and some people couldn’t care less. Last year, my mom sent my roommate and I a huge themed care package with candy, necklaces, and a bunch of cute things. Now as half of a couple, I can express only confusion as I try to explain my lack of knowledge of proper Valentine’s Day etiquette. For once, the Internet has not been helpful because many suggestions seem like things that could and should be done year round. Here are a few:

1. Flowers. Get them just because they’re pretty. Get them for a friend, girlfriend, family member, anyone. They’re colorful and are sure to brighten up someone’s day in this snow-filled winter.

2. Similar to flowers, surprise him/her with a little gift. Doesn’t have to be expensive and it’s a super cute way to show your feelings. Examples: send his favorite candy before a big exam, cupcakes just because you can, hide a sticky note with a cute message somewhere you know she’ll find it, get their favorite stuffed animal or a favorite sports team hat… Get creative!

3. Special plans. Dates should not be limited to Valentines Day, but sometimes with all of the stuff we do, dates become a rarity. So whether it’s with your boyfriend or best friends, try to plan an excuse to get off campus every 2-3 weeks. Think movies, dinners, museums, concerts, sports games, etc.

4. Saying I love you. Telling someone you appreciate them should not be limited to a holiday, so be thankful on Valentineā€™s Day and tell someone you love them on Thanksgiving. Seriously though, think about the people you love regardless of your relationship status, call your parents or friends at home just to say hi. Don’t get caught up in hating the red and pink outfits or those obnoxious PDA couples. Instead, appreciate the love you’ve experienced in your life and try to spread some around. Most importantly, DO THIS YEAR ROUND. Love should not be limited to a day, so don’t do it :)

So whether you’re single or all tied down, have a great Valentineā€™s Day. Just remember, don’t be afraid to celebrate love throughout the year. Little things can be constant and wonderful reminders to friends and family. Little things have the power to really brighten someone’s day.Ā
