In Defense of 8ams

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Unpopular opinion, but I love 8ams.  Like many of you, this used to be me:

However, last semester I was transformed.

8ams are great because….

#1. You look like you have your life together even if you don’t.

Your roommates and friends think you’re the most hardworking person who ever lived. I’m not joking, tell anyone you’re voluntarily taking 8ams and they’ll shower you with praise and compliments of how dedicated and ambitious you are.

#2. You cut your omelet line waiting time from forty-five minutes to five minutes in Mac.

Also, guys, if you haven’t experienced the joy that is Fernando in the morning, I am so sorry for you. He is my favorite employee, and maybe even my favorite person at BC. Because I had all 8ams last semester, I was one of the few people in the dining hall when it opened at 7:30. He memorized my face and usual order of scrambled egg whites, and now whenever he sees me come towards the omelet station he will AUTOMATICALLY START MAKING MY ORDER FOR ME. I don’t even have to ask. I will be in the back of the line and he will look at me, wink, and throw some egg whites on the griddle for me.  He’ll start your morning off on a great note, I promise.

#3. Your day ends so much earlier.

Getting out of classes at 1:15 is the most satisfying experience.  You can go to the plex right after classes and NO ONE is there. I hate cute guys seeing me sweaty and struggling, so I tend to avoid the plex at the peak hours between 4 and 6 when everyone else gets out of classes. If your classes end early you can avoid that rush! Honestly whenever I go to the plex around 1-2, there are about fifteen people there and half of them are over the age of sixty.

#4. No one will see you looking like garbage.

If you guys are like me and are worried you look like a piece of trash in the morning, fear not! Actual video of me walking to 8ams in the winter:

There are so few people who sign up for 8ams and actually go to them.  Your chances of running into that cute guy from your philosophy class are incredibly slim.  Just throw on some shades, grab some coffee and you’re good to go!

#5. You CAN go out on Thursday nights and still make it to your Friday 8ams.

When I first started taking 8ams last semester, I was so worried I would have to forego Thursday nights out.  However, if you’re smart about it, you can absolutely go out on Thursdays and be up and ready for your 8ams on Fridays.  Just make sure if you’re drinking that you eat enough, drink lots and lots of water, and stop drinking early on in the night.  No one wants you to be tipsy during your 8am chem lab when you’re working with dangerous and flammable chemicals.

So do it guys! Venture out of your comfort zone and sign up for some 8ams next semester!
