The Difference Between a Fun Friend and a Good Friend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Over the years (I say that like I’ve lived so many), we accumulate many friends, and each friend has his or her own place in our lives. You have friends you only meet for lunch after you’ve had Calculus class together, and you have friends you always sit with in the library. But then you have those friends you hang out with frequently. You see them on the weekends and during the weekdays. You could call them your close friends, but that doesn’t always mean they are good friends. I don’t mean that makes them bad friends— what I mean is that he or she could be a ‘fun friend.’

Okay, so now you’re thinking that ‘fun friend’ sounds like an awkward way to say ‘friends with benefits.’ That’s not what I mean at all. A fun friend is a person you spend a lot of time with, especially when it comes to going out. Fun friends are the ones you text when you want to make evening plans or you want a shopping buddy. Even though you spend a lot of time with them, ‘fun friends’ aren’t the friends you call when you’re in a bind. While you always get along and have similar interests, you may not click on a deeper level. It doesn’t mean you don’t like having each other around or that one will inevitably stab the other in the back, it just means that they will never see you crying in the middle of the dining hall because you were having roommate problems. That’s what you usually expect from a good friend.

But it’s important to have fun friends along with good friends because sometimes you want to be the excitable ‘Woo! Girl,’ the wild drinking buddy, or the life of someone else’s party. So learn to know the difference between your fun friends and your good friends. Having a mix of both keeps your life exciting and unpredictable. Always be open to the changing roles of the friends around you. Sometimes a fun friend can surprise you and turn into a good friend. And ultimately, fun friends are still your friends. You just might not talk about anything besides guy drama and gossip with them. And who can ever get enough of that?
