Healthy Dorm Room Snacks

If you’re like me, indulging on holiday treats is just around the corner. In order to stay healthy before the holiday festivities begin, here are some easy snacking ideas for your dorm that are healthier than Easy Mac and pizza:

1. Microwaveable Oatmeal

This readily available and hearty food is both delicious and nutritious. This snack will fuel your body for a fraction of the calories as more traditional snacks. To curb your every craving, you can find these microwavable oatmeal containers at almost every grocery and convenience store in an incredible variety of flavors.

2. Apples and Peanut Butter

Twist: Try celery and peanut butter!

Believe it or not, peanut butter tastes even better on apples. This delicious and fruity snack will fill you up AND satisfy your sweet tooth. If you are feeling particularly healthy, you can substitute celery for apples and get some extra fiber in your body!

3. Rice Cakes

While some may say that rice cakes are bland and flavorless, I beg to disagree. Rice cakes are delicious and light snacks that won’t leave you feeling bloated or heavy. These snacks also come in many sizes and flavors with different types of rice… and they come in a variety of brands. You are sure to find a type that your taste buds will love!

4. Veggie Chips

The healthy alternative to potato chips! These delicious chips come in circles, straws, sticks, and many other shapes! They are fun and colorful, but also have a great crunch with fewer calories than classic potato chips. 

5. Trail Mix

Trail mix is great as a nice salty snack. You can even find some trail mixes with M&M candies in them. At some grocery stores, you can make your own trail mix by adding nuts, seeds, and other healthy items to create your own unique mix.

6. Yogurt

Yogurt always helps curb my craving for sugar. This snack will give you energy and keep you feeling full. There are also many different types, flavors, and forms of yogurt. I am a big fan of Stonyfield yogurt smoothies that you can find at your local grocery stores.

7. Certain Cereals

I LOVE Special K Smart Start cereal and I always have a box of it in my room. Not only is it a crunchy and delicious cereal, it keeps me full and satisfied for hours. There are also many other brands of cereals that can help satisfy your cravings without excessive sugar.

8. Boom Chicka Pop/Skinny Pop

These brands of popcorn are the perfect salty snack that won’t make you feel gross after you eat them. You can enjoy delicious popcorn…and you don’t even have to wait for it to pop! You can find these brands at local grocery and convenience stores.

9. Carrots and Hummus

If you’re in the mood for something crunchy, carrots and hummus are the perfect snack that you can keep in your mini fridge for a mid-day snack. With many different brands of hummus and many different styles/cuts of carrots to choose from, you can switch up this classic snack to adhere to different cravings.

10. Granola Bars

From power bars, to oatmeal bars, to chocolate covered granola bars, there are so many different types of bars to choose from for a snack.
