How to Lose a Roommate in 10 Days: The Dos and Don’ts of Rooming

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Living with people is difficult.  No housing situation is perfect, but you can make it come a lot closer to perfection by following these simple guidelines!

Do:

  • Ask them how their day was and actually listen
  • Listen to music with your headphones in if they are working
  • Respect boundaries
  • Be a “glass-half-full” kind of girl
  • Wake them up if they accidentally overslept (try to be positive about that)

Don’t:

  • Borrow their clothes, stain them, and put them back like you didn’t
  • Steal their boyfriend
  • Invite your friends to sleep in their bed when they’re not there without their permission
  • Throw a party in your room, don’t invite them
  • Express your love of 90s Britney Spears with an impromptu cover of Baby One More Time at 3 in the morning
  • Wake them up to tell them you’re home safely when they didn’t ask you to, repeat 15 minutes later in case they forgot
  • Take pictures of them while they are sleeping and show the pictures to them in the morning
  • Rock the Birthday Suit as often as possible, your body is a work of art
  • Have a conversation about them on the phone with your friend, while they are in the room
  • Tell them about your entire day from start to finish while they are trying to do their homework
