Muddy Madness: Why are We Obsessed with Being Covered in Mud?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

The end of the year is here, and although it means finals, papers, packing up, and saying good-bye to some friends for the summer, it also means something more fun, carefree and stress-relieving.  That is Mudstock.  Every spring, as they did yesterday, UGBC hosts Mudstock right before finals and in conjunction with the Modstock concert.  Mudstock is a much-anticipated event where teams of students register for a volleyball game against other student teams.  But it is not just any volleyball game; it is in a pit of mud.  You get to dive, spike and set on a court made of mud, and it is totally ok!

Between students camping out to register, the recent popularity of mud runs, and the currently trending Spartan Runs, there seems to be an obsession with showing off your athletic ability and getting as dirty as possible doing it.  If you want to join in with the trend and did not get the chance to register for Mudstock this year, here are some other grubby events in Boston that you can participate in!

  • Massachusetts Tuff Scramblers Adventure Race Spring 2013 is a 5k obstacle course on May 18th at Rehoboth State Forest. The 5K includes anything from hay bale hurdles, rock walls, water, monkey bars, tunnels and of course MUD!
  • Boston Massachusetts Tough Mudder 2013 is on June 2nd and 3rd, and this challenge is for the ultimate mudders. The course is 10-12 miles long and takes an average of 3 hours to complete, but it is a great workout and allows you to get down and dirty in order to complete the obstacles!
  • Ruckus Run Boston is June 15th and 16th in Marshfield, Massachusetts is an event anyone can participate in. There is a competitive four-mile obstacle course for those who are trained, a two-mile obstacle course for those who have no training, and an all-day family event where you can keep repeating the obstacles until you are completely caked in mud.  Regardless of which race you participate in, there will be lots of mud, obstacles, and a beer at the end of the race (if you are 21+).
  • Boston Massachusetts Dirty Girl Mud Run 2013 is a 3.1 miles obstacle course on July 13, 2013 that will have you climbing, crawling and trudging through 11 fun obstacles!
  • Boston 5K Foam Fest is on July 13th and combines foam, mud, and fitness to this fun obstacle course!

So join in on this popular fitness trend and get down and dirty at any of these events this spring and summer!  If you were able to check out Mudstock yesterday, you can understand why it is so much fun to get muddy while being athletic!
