Nana Knows Best: Advice from Grandma on Love & Boys

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

We may call them crazy or senile, but deep down we all love our grandmothers and would be there for them in an instant.  Sometimes we might get caught listening to their stories about growing up, dressing up for nights out dancing or dealing with raising one of our parents, but we love them nonetheless.  Often times, I find that both of my grandmothers can provide some great advice.  Advice that goes beyond how to make homemade meatballs and sauce or get a stain out of anything; I am talking about love advice.  Yes ladies, love advice from senior citizens may be applicable to our lives today.  Here is some advice that my own grandmothers have taught me about love and boys.

“Every guy likes a girl with a little love around the middle.  Gives them something to hold on to.”

“Horses sweat, men perspire, and ladies glow.”

“I gave you good genes.  Don’t go wasting them on the first guy who you fall in love with.  Make sure it is the right guy that makes you happy.”

“The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.”

“In life there will be people that need to learn to open their minds and shut their big mouths.”

“The fewer clothes you wear, the less the person will think about the person you are on the inside.”

“Honey, if you ever need a hug you don’t need a man.  You can come right to me and I will hold you for as long as you want.”

“If someone doesn’t treat you right, you tell them to come talk to me; I know just the right way to treat someone.”

“Be careful falling for a man that says he works for the government.  That is what your grandfather told me, and the next thing I know I am dating a man in the Navy.”

“Make sure you are always treated fairly; don’t compromise.”

“Shut your mouth and save a marriage.”

And then there is great love advice from those huggable Grandma’s on screen…

Hannah’s Grandma from Pretty Little Liars:

“I don’t own anyone, there was a war that took care of that.  Read a book.”

Emily Gilmore from Gilmore Girls:

[Response to Rory’s boyfriend Dean honking when he arrives and not coming to the door]
“It certainly is not fine.  This is not a drive-thru, she’s not fried chicken.

Princess Amelia’s Grandmother from The Princess Diaries:

[Queen Clarisse comes into the kitchen and sits down, after Mia stomped on Nicholas’s foot, after learning that he was the one who wanted to steal her throne. Mia is eating ice cream] “As a queen I simply cannot condone it.  But as a grandma, I say, ‘Right on.’”

Mabel “Madea” Simmons from the Madea movies

“Love is stronger than any addiction, baby; hell, it *is* one.”

Remember, no matter what you are going through, Grandma is always there to love you, offer advice, a hug and a big plate of chocolate chip cookies!
