Nineties Nostalgia Takes Over Our Closets

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

I think it’s safe to say that the Nineties are just about everyone in our generation’s favorite decade.  With Saved by the Bell on Netflix and Third Eye Blind and Nelly selling out a couple weeks ago, all signs point to yes, the Nineties are back!  And that means that we can see some Nineties fashions making an appearance in our wardrobes this summer.  Here are some Nineties trends to keep your eye out for the next time you go shopping.

1.  Neon
Finally, neon is not just meant for Marathon Monday tanks any longer.  A pop of neon is the perfect touch to any summer outfit.  Whether it’s a neon v-neck paired with cut off jean shorts or a cute neon bracelet or necklace.  You could even channel your inner Lisa Turtle (Saved by the Bell, duh!) in these shoes from Aldo.

2.  Overalls
I literally cannot explain to you my excitement at the thought of overalls coming back in style.  After basically OD-ing on this particular article of clothing in kindergarten, I think my hiatus has gone on long enough.  This is a perfectly fun and cute addition to any summer wardrobe. The Man Repeller (a fashion blog that you can check out at manrepeller.com) recently did a post on how to dress overalls up and down!

3.  Cute sneakers
While I always will hate the combination of jeans and running shoes, that doesn’t mean that we have to shy away from sneakers all together!  Collegiette fashionistas have to be all about comfort, and that’s why this trend is perfect for us.  Pair chucks, keds, or even nike dunks with your overalls, jean shorts, even a dress if you get the combination just right.

4.  Crop tops
Back in the day, we called these belly shirts, but no matter what you call them, mid-riff baring tops are back. Take a leaf out of Kelly Kapowskis’ book, and wear your crop top with high waisted pants if you want to show just a little bit less skin. Check out this model wearing Nasty Gal’s Americana Crop Tank

Don’t be afraid to combine all of these trends and just completely embrace the Nineties nostalgia!
