It’s that time of year again. The days are growing shorter (hello, Chestnut Hill, if I want to wake up at 2 pm I should be able to enjoy more than two hours of daylight), finals are approaching (my BFF Bapst), and Christmas is just around the corner (cookies and eggnog now, please). Besides attending ugly sweater parties, religiously listening to the Christmas station on Pandora, and making delicious holiday cocktails, watching Christmas movies is another great way to try to get into the holiday spirit.
The Santa Clause
Tim Allen is unforgettable in this classic Christmas comedy. My mom and I have a rule that no Christmas movies or music can be watched or listened to until Thanksgiving, but when it comes to this movie we nearly cave. Make sure to watch the original though, because the later editions deserve coal in their stockings.
The Holiday
What’s better than a Christmas movie? A Christmas movie with a hot male lead and English accents, duh. Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, and Jack Black star in this dynamic holiday flick that will have you laughing, crying, and wishing you were cuddled up in bed in a cozy cabin in England with Jude Law at your side.
Love Actually
Did someone mention hot male leads, English accents, and Christmas? Love Actually is everything anyone could ever want in a movie. If you’ve seen it, you know what I mean. If you haven’t, what the hell are you still doing sitting here reading this article?! It will still be here when you’re done watching. So if you really love Christmas… go watch this perfect film.
A Christmas Story
If you have a television and cable, I’m sure you’ve seen this movie since TBS does a marathon of it every year on Christmas day. But just in case you live under a rock or you can’t possibly wait until then, A Christmas Story is a solid choice to get you into the holiday spirit.
Other great choices are Elf, Christmas with the Kranks, Home Alone, and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
Although cinematography has really stepped up in the 21st century with technological advances and such, don’t forget to give some of these older films a try. They’re called classics for a reason, even if they’re not in color.
It’s a Wonderful Life
Miracle on 34th Street
A Christmas Carol
Scrooge (Although the 1988 adaptation, Scrooged, with Bill Murray is a great choice, as well.)
For all the collegiettes™ who are still kids at heart, here’s a list of the best cartoon Christmas movies!
A Charlie Brown Christmas
Frosty the Snowman
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
The Year Without a Santa Claus
The Nightmare before Christmas
Instead of sitting here trying to figure out whether or not my last choice is truly a Christmas movie or is actually a Halloween movie (it’s a losing battle, the world will never know), settle down with a cup of cocoa, some candy canes, and your BFFS (not Bapst, sorry) and enjoy these festive flicks!
