The Pros and Cons of Living in the Mods

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

As housing selection rolled around last April, all juniors were hopeful that the group of six they had created would become proud Mod-owners.  Luckily for me and my roommates, our dream of having our very own Mod came true.  After move-in last week, we realized that there was a lot we didn’t know about the Mods – after all, how many of you had actually spent a lot of time in the Mods during the day?  So I created a list of some of the pros and cons of actually having your own Mod.

Pros:

  1. Space – The first floor of the Mod is actually very spacious, even though it doesn’t feel like that when there are tons of randoms packed into it.  There are two storage closets that make it easier to have those small bedrooms.  Also, one thing I didn’t know until I moved in was that there is an extra shower upstairs, so there are the equivalent of two full bathrooms for six people.
  2. Parties – You can be the party host whenever you want.  Not just pregames, but the actual parties.  Freshman year, we went in search of these Mod parties and now you have the luxury of hosting your own… and actually knowing the people that come to it.  Also, going to parties right in your own backyard makes the “commute” so easy.
  3. The backyard – I cannot get over how much I love having that little patch of grass, picnic table, and grill in the back.  And we have already been taking advantage of it.
  4. Tailgates – This actually might be my favorite part about living in the Mods so far.  Having that built in grassy area right behind you makes the perfect tailgating spot.  Not to mention all the other tailgates going on around you.  Saving the Mod tailgates until you’re actually twenty-one is worth it.
  5. Envy – The Mods are the most coveted of the senior housing.  I think I speak for everyone in the Mods when I say that we all know how lucky we are to have one.  They are one of the symbols of your senior year at BC.  It wouldn’t be the same without one.

Cons:

  1. Bedroom Space – Our bedrooms are tiny.  And by that I mean that my freshman triple in Claver was bigger than this.  My direct and I share one desk and one closet.  I didn’t realize how much having our own desks mattered.
  2. No outlets in the bathroom and no dishwasher – Our first night going out in the Mod, my roommates and I all went to get ready only to realize that there was one outlet in the bathroom and it was completely blocked by the shelving unit they have installed… This makes for some difficulty with six girls.  Also, there are no dishwashers and a pretty small kitchen sink.  The dishes pile up ridiculously quick.
  3. Lighting – The lighting situation in the Mods is bizarre.  There are barely any overhead lights downstairs and none in the bedrooms.  If you get a Mod next year, BRING A LOT OF LIGHTS.  I don’t really understand why there are all these light switches and no installed lights.
  4. People walking in your back door – The other night, my roommates and I were just sitting downstairs watching TV when some random person just literally opened our back door and walked in.  I know this has happened to other Mod owners as well.  If you don’t have a Mod, do not just walk into any random Mod at any time of the day.
  5. It’s literally always dirty – The Mod we blocked with hosted last night’s tailgate and we were really excited that we would finally wake up the next morning with a clean Mod.  From after the game until we woke up the next morning, our Mod became cluttered and dirty again.  Even when you’re not hosting things, it is so easy for that space to become filthy.

Even though some of these cons are ridiculous, I would never ever give up owning a Mod.  For those of you who are seniors, you already know this.  For you underclassmen, it really is worth it so start getting your groups of six together!
