The Pros and Cons of Spring Cleaning

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Ahhh spring: a time where winter coats retreat back to their storage bins and summer fever begins to set in. Along with the change of weather inevitably comes something else: cleaning. Whether it’s being overwhelmed by the mountain of clothes that never seems to leave the floor, or struggling to find the time to organize your space, there can be some mixed reviews on spring cleaning. Here are some of the pros and cons to decluttering this spring:

PROS

1. You get to justify spending on new clothes. Although your bank account is still recovering post spring break, what better way to feel good about buying new clothes than throwing out old ones that you no longer wear?

2. It lets you have a fresh start. Cleaning out your space gives you a chance to clear your mind and realize how much space you actually have under that mountain of clothes.

3. You feel productive. In the midst of midterms and trying to nail down a summer job, procrastination is inevitable. By donating some of your old things, you will feel accomplished and can be proud for giving away your stuff to a good cause.

CONS

1. You are confronted by your embarrassing younger years. Being recently faced with my middle school diary during my last spring cleaning, a trip down memory is not always pleasant, and is somehow always filled with Juicy Couture.

2. You develop spontaneous emotional attachment to the items that you should throw away. Although that Jesse McCartney CD was a hit with you and your friends, it’s probably time for you and your beautiful soul to move on.

3. It takes a lot of time. Because who really wants to sort through a sock drawer when the weather is nice.

Either way, if you choose to clean your space or cling to your old things, Happy Spring!

Hi! I'm Shannon Brink and I'm currently a freshman at BC. I'm from a small town in New Jersey, and I love being outdoors and traveling with friends and family. I'm the youngest of three, and living in a male dominated house where football typically takes over the dinner conversation, it's refreshing to have an outlet to talk about things that genuinely interest me and are relevant to my life as a clueless freshman trying to learn the ropes of college.
Emily Boches is currently a student at Boston College, majoring in Communications with a minor in Philosophy. She is also hoping to become a Veterinarian in the future. Emily is originally from Massachusetts, just 30 minutes outside of Boston. Her small city lies right on the coast where the beach is no more than 2 minutes away. She spends her free time getting addicted to shows on Netflix (it happens to the best of us), napping, and taking Buzzfeed quizzes.
