As a senior, I understand the constant compulsion to go out. You feel like every second you stay in your room, you are missing out on more and more unforgettable moments. Everyone else in the world is having a good time and you are just sitting in your room. Life is passing you by. You say things like “When else can I got out every night again?” or “I just won’t drink that much,” or simply, “I’m in college.” While I’ve said all of the above to myself and certainly agree that there are times where they are valid questions and assertions, there are times when you really should just stay in, and here they are:
When you’ve had a debilitating cough for approximately 3 weeks
If you’re constantly coughing up a lung and causing others around you to recoil from the sound, please stay in. Rest, get better, and go out another night without the constant need to excuse yourself from the crowd to attempt to stifle your frightening hack.
If more than 5 people have come up to you in the last 3 days and said “You were hilarious last night!”
A little attention is always great, but chances are, if you’ve gotten that much attention in that amount of time, you need a break. Stay in; keep your audience waiting a couple nights. I’m sure they’ll be around when you head back out. And you’ll be just as hilarious.
If you have two midterms and a paper due the next day.
I’m sure that you’ve been studying all day and that you can finish your paper in the morning, but wouldn’t you rather take the tests feeling like you actually slept and didn’t get run over by a truck?
When you’ve gone out the past 7 nights in a row.
You may feel like you can take on the world, although I doubt you would, but the toll that this 8th night would take on your body is not worth it. You’re already sleep deprived, nauseous, sore, and full of Late Night; don’t make it any worse, just stay in.
When you actually want to stay in
If you really don’t feel like going out, don’t. It’s okay if you want to spend the night in bed watching pointless television. There are a lot more nights of the school year left, and you’ll have a better time during any one of them if you actually want to go out.
