Reasons Why You Should be Watching “The Mindy Project”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

On October 4th, 2016, “The Mindy Project” returns to Hulu for its fifth season. I have been completely hooked on the show from the first day that I started watching it. Mindy Kaling, creator and star of the show, absolutely shines as a brilliant, awkward, and single gynecologist in New York City. I would definitely say that “The Mindy Project” is one of my favorite shows at the moment.  Here are a few reasons why:

1. The Humor

The show capitalizes on the funny and awkward moments that happen in Mindy’s everyday life. The show has humor similar to shows like “Parks and Recreation” and “Modern Family,” but with more of a feminine flair. Every episode, I find myself laughing out loud at the crazy characters and situations.

2. Relevant Plotlines

“The Mindy Project” is so entertaining because it deals with real world situations like dating, balancing work/a social life/sleep, and trying to achieve your goals even when things go horribly wrong. In one episode, Mindy tries to juggle a date with her long distance boyfriend and an important battle between her office and its new competitors. We’ve all been in situations where we have to choose between our significant others and our work or commitments to our friends, so watching Mindy hilariously try to stay loyal to both groups makes viewers feel more connected to the show.

3. Realistic Dating World

Mindy Kaling’s character, Mindy Lahiri, dates many different types of men in the show, so all viewers can make connections between her love interests and those in our own lives. Also, Mindy struggles with how to handle online dating and relationships with exes and coworkers.  These are all common dating scenarios in our society today, and seeing them on screen makes the show even more appealing.

4. Relatable Characters

The show does a really great job of conveying all different types of personalities in the show. Do you ever feel sassy and hot-tempered? You’ll relate to the character of Danny. Do you ever feel like you’re so lazy that you can’t be bothered to do work but you love to online shop? You’ll relate to Tamra. The list goes on, but the main point is that there are so many characters that capture the emotions and personalities that we have all experienced at some point.

5. Strong Female Lead

Mindy Lahiri, the main character on the show, is a single mother with her own business, has a brilliant career as a gynecologist, has unparalleled confidence, and has an incredible New York City apartment. She has done very well for herself, but also has many flaws that make her even more inspiring to viewers. We can all learn a little something from Mindy about life, love, and confidence.

6. Feel-good TV

For me, one of the best parts of the show is that after each episode, I always feel happy. Seeing Mindy and the rest of the characters handle such crazy and hilarious situations makes me forget about the stresses of my day and just smile.

Happy watching!
