To this day, Welles Remy Crowther is truly a hero for our country and serves as a prominent icon for our school’s mission of men and women for others. Welles attended Boston College, where he played varsity men’s lacrosse for four years as number 19. Welles was a member of the Boston College graduation class of 1999. On September 11th, 2001, Welles lost his life helping others escape the twin towers during the terrorist attacks in New York City. Welles wrapped his trademark red bandanna around his face to help him breathe through the smoke and debris. He was able to help many people escape the burning building, guiding them to safety. Welles’ actions will never be forgotten here at Boston College, and every year the Boston College community is gathered in October to run a 5k titled “The Red Bandana Run” to honor Welles.
This year on October 16th, come 1,900 registered participants gathered to run the annual 5k which donates all of its proceeds to the Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust. The annual run was an incredible turnout as always, and you could feel the heartwarming environment every minute. Many varsity, club, and intramural teams join the run each year, and it is always amazing to see both lacrosse teams there in support of Welles and his family. Each year, the Mr. and Mrs. Crowther give a moving speech to the participants, always ensuring that Welles is there with everyone feeling the love the BC community brings to him. It is truly uplifting to see the Crowthers at the run each year, knowing that they feel supported and loved and ensuring that their son lives on in the lives of us at Boston College. https://storify.com/BostonCollege/red-bandanna-2016
