Rusted Revolution: 5 Easy Hairstyles to Try

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Allow us to introduce ourselves:  Our names are Lucy McBride
and Lesley Burr.  We’re two bloggers with a love for fashion, among other things.  Our site, Rusted Revolution, began as a side project – a hobby through which we could channel our observations on fashion, music, travel, food, and the arts, sharing them with whomever cared to look.  Since RR’s birth in early September 2010, a growing Internet following has encouraged us to provide our readers with consistent news, trends, and reflections in the vast realm that is pop culture.

Because of the rush to get to that early morning class or meet up with friends on a Friday night, we tend to stick to the basics when it comes to hair and makeup, using the little time and energy we have on outfit choices.  I myself am guilty of sticking to the same hairstyles simply out of habit and/or convenience, but as a fearless fashion and beauty enthusiast, I am always looking to try something new.

Surprisingly, switching up your look is a lot easier than you might expect – not every hairstyle has to involve hundreds of bobby pins and bottles of product.  Lucky for you guys, I’m a YouTube professional who has chronicled a variety of hair and makeup looks for you to experiment with.  I’ve selected five styles that you’ll be able to create in under ten minutes and included corresponding video tutorials to better help you see the visual process!

1)     The Faux Hawk:  While the “Mohawk” might conjure images of skater boys and emo rockers, trendy beauty icons like Rihanna and Ciara made the “Faux Hawk” famous for females.  I personally love the Faux Hawk because it’s the perfect hybrid of edgy and feminine – it gives volume, without the obnoxious connotation of the “Snooki poof.”  YouTube beauty guru Itsjudytime gives a fabulous tutorial on how to achieve the look.  (Materials Needed:  hairspray, flat iron, bobby pins, teasing comb)

2)     The Fishtail:  Braids are timeless; consider images of ancient Greek goddesses, medieval European queens, American prairie girls and the belles of Hollywood Boulevard.  Braids can be spotted on everyone from runway models to celebs to street savvy fashionistas.  The reason?  Braids are feminine, romantic, and relatively easy to do.  While the fishtail braid might look extremely intimidating (I definitely used to feel this way), it is in fact SO easy to achieve with a bit of practice.  The final result is awesome, too.  Check out this tutorial from Ahanhbarbie34 (Materials Needed: hair elastic, hairspray, teasing comb)

3)     Bohemian Twist:  Like a braid, a twist is a very romantic and feminine way to add flair to your hair without going overboard.  The Bohemian Twist by anneorshine is a gorgeous and simple updo that’s casual enough for everyday wear, but also adds a touch of glam to your look – it’s something of a combination between a French braid and a simple twist.  I can totally visualize a fashionable girl rocking this hairstyle at a summer music festival.  (Materials Needed: bobby pins, two hair elastics, hairspray [optional])

4)     Fake Fringe:  Ever wondered what you would look like with bangs but were too hesitant to take the plunge? I’m sure you’ve heard of those clip-on extensions, but personally, fake hair freaks me out and it’s hard to find a color match (especially if you’re a blonde or redhead).  Itsjudytime demonstrates a really cool way to create some fake side-swept bangs in the following video.  You won’t belief how real your bangs will look!  (Materials Needed: bobby pins, a scarf or thick headband)

5)     Beach Waves:  Messy beach-y bedhead hair is always sexy, simply because it gives off such a casual and undone vibe.  Check out this tutorial from a Free People hairstylist.  (Materials Needed: thickening spray, texturizing spray, blowdryer, small-barreled curling iron, metal clips or bobby pins, hairspray)

With spring just around the corner, now is the perfect time to try something new.  Sometimes, a hairstyle becomes the perfect complement to an outfit.  Good luck!
