On Saturday, September 17th, Boston College’s Campus Activity Board organized the first ever StokesSet on the Stokes lawn. MisterWives, an indie-pop band based out of New York City, headlined the show. Known for its songs “Our Own House” and “Reflections,” the band brought a fun night of music to campus.
To be honest, in the days leading up to the show, I did not have high expectations for the night. The event was set to start around 5:30/6, which seemed incredibly early to me. On a typical weekend, my friends and I get ready to go out around 9:30 (usually even later). So when I found out that the concert doors opened at 5:30 pm, I was nervous. Additionally, the night before the show, my friends and I tried to listen to some MisterWives music to get excited, but we realized we really only knew two of their songs. We weren’t optimistic about having a good time since we barely even knew the band’s songs. We walked to Stokes on Saturday with low expectations.
HOWEVER, I was pleasantly surprised by the show. Honestly, the venue was incredible. Boston College’s aesthetically pleasing campus served as the perfect backdrop for an outdoor concert. Dancing around with my best friends and seeing Gasson beautifully lit up right next to us was such a surreal moment. It made me feel so lucky and blessed to be at such an awesome school with a great community.
The concert was a lot of fun and MisterWives really knew how to pump up the crowd. During the show, people were crowd-surfing, standing on other people, and jumping around like jumping beans. Everyone was smiling. Despite the fact that many people had never even heard of MisterWives or only knew one or two of their songs, the band did a great job keeping everyone engaged in the show. They covered the famous song “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Robert Hazard that Cyndi Lauper made famous. Everyone knows the words to that song so the whole crowd was electric when it came on – even the guys!
Another really nice part of the concert was that MisterWives only performed for about an hour. It was the perfect amount of time for a show and they didn’t try to play too many songs that people didn’t know, which was nice. The timing also worked out so that the concert was over by 8:30, leaving plenty of time for people to go out after and continue the fun.
Juice, Boston College’s own band, opened for the show and did a great job getting the crowd ready. They always put on a great show, and every BC student feels proud to go to school with such talented musicians. StokesSet was no exception as students on the lawn cheered and danced along to some awesome music.
Overall, the first annual StokesSet was a real success. BC students enjoyed a great night of music, dancing and fun. We already can’t wait for next year!
