A Talk About Race

“What did you say?” is a common reaction when race comes up at BC. Everyone at BC is extremely sensitive about race, because no one wants to say the wrong thing. As a result, I find a lot of people just never talk about it.

While it is completely understandable that no one wants to bring up such a controversial topic, as it might be uncomfortable, college is the time to push yourself and what you believe. How can you grow if you never leave your comfort zone?

As a top ranked school, full of intellectual students, and motivated by social justice, one would think that our school would be buzzing about important topics facing our nation and the world – including race. Instead, when you enter into Hillside on a busy Monday morning all you hear are conversations filled with gossip from the weekend and excitement for the next big social weekend.

That being said, BC does offer some spectacular clubs if you are looking for deeper conversations. Through joining clubs such as Backgrounds this semester, I personally have started to reflect on my stance on how race plays a role in my life. While I am not going to share every thought or idea I had, I will say that I’ve grown a lot in the last few weeks.

Dedicating my time to discussing race has opened my eyes to the fact that there are many people on campus who have very intellectual points regarding issues going on in the world, and I for one want to hear them.

It saddens me that in such an amazing school, that so many of us, including myself, don’t always dedicate our time to discussing what really matters. So I challenge you to join me in my journey for deeper conversations. Bring up race in society at your next coffee date, mention what is going on in Ukraine at lunch, or any other issue that strikes the social justice flame inside of you.
