Think Pink! Ways To Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

I’d be willing to go out on a limb and say that most people know someone who has been affected by breast cancer. Important women in our lives—mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and family friends have shown strength in battling breast cancer. The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, dedicated to support those who have battled the disease and to educate women on ways to protect themselves against it and recognize signs. Don’t let this month pass you by without promoting breast cancer awareness and women’s health!

Here are a few things you can do to support Breast Cancer Awareness this month:

Encourage the women in your life to become self aware, and do so yourself!

It is not too early to know what is normal for you! At 20, women begin receiving clinical breast exams at the doctor, and it is important that as young women we are familiar with what is normal for our bodies so we can recognize when anything is out of the ordinary.  Click here for more information.

Attend Breast Cancer fundraising and awareness events

Besides the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the Ellie Fund here in Boston hosts a number of fundraising events in October. The events are a perfect reason to get out in the city with your friends and support a great cause while having fun! Check out their full list of events here.

Shop Pink!

What better excuse to be decked out in pink than in support of breast cancer? A lot of companies have exclusive products for October that support breast cancer fundraising.  My personal favorite is OPI’s Pink of Hearts 2013 nail polish set which includes the classic Pink-ing of You and the sparkly More than a Glimmer as well as pink ribbon and crystal decals. Even the BC bookstore is getting in the spirit and selling some super cute pink merchandise!

Don’t let this month pass you by without appreciating and acknowledging all the strong women in your life who have been affected by breast cancer, and take this opportunity to promote women’s health!
