Maybe it’s a freshman thing, but I am oh-so tempted to buy every single member of my family a form of BC apparel. It seems practical. I mean, I do go here; so, I am allowed to aggressively purchase items from the Bookstore. It’s not like I’m one of those people who wears sweatshirts from colleges they don’t even go to (I see you Harvard Swim crew neck wearers) and it’s not really a pride thing either.
Ultimately, I just like the convenience of it. The Bookstore is open six days a week. I can use my Eagle Bucks, and there is a plethora (I knew SAT vocab would come in handy one day) of items from which I can choose. In need of a desk chair? I can get that. How about some lawn furniture? A couple dog bowls? Anything I could get for my family at the mall is available with the BC insignia on it.
Even more, when I purchase sweaters, hats, sweat-pants for my mom or my sister, I can keep in mind that these items can be of use to me as well. After all, sharing is caring. So when I buy that BC quarter zip for my sister, it’s out of love but also out of conservation. I am actively conserving my funds. Why buy the same thing twice? I spend not just to spread holiday joy and fulfill familial obligations, but also to enjoy these purchases for myself under the carefully placed veneer of “gift”. Thus, this Christmas season, a gift for you is a gift for me!
Now, back to convenience. I can do last minute shopping if I choose. I don’t have to worry about boarding the BC shuttle and then getting onto the T. Carrying bags filled with Christmas presents on an already crowded subway, no thank you. No public transportation during the holiday season for me.
If you’re still not convinced that I have a serious Christmas life hack here, just remember, BC apparel is unique in its own way. All your friends’ dads, uncles, and grandpas will have various sports paraphernalia from your native state. (Apparently there are other sports teams besides the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, and Bruins, who knew?). But, what about items that are specific to BC? Not everyone can say they have a Doug Flutie jersey (insert moderate sarcasm)! But really, why not give them something that everyone else probably doesn’t have? You might be modest as to where you go to school, but I’m almost positive every family member will be proud to wear your college apparel.
Honestly, I probably won’t just buy my family Christmas presents from the BC Bookstore; buying a gift that both benefits you and the recipient requires too much effort, a lot of forethought, you know? Whatever you decide to buy your family for Christmas this season (or hand-make because who doesn’t love crafting? Rhetorical question: everyone does.), it’s the thought that counts. Right?
