Top Four Ways to Promote Your Health as a Young Woman

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

With Breast Cancer Awareness Month in full swing, HC BC wants to get more young women to “think pink.” According to ChickRx, a website that I believe every girl should frequent, there are four different areas in which all females could reduce their risk for breast or ovarian cancer and begin to develop habits for a life filled with health.

Lifestyle

  • Chomp on “cancer fighting foods”. Believe it or not, there actually are foods that can fill your “preventative plate”! These foods include, but are not limited to, fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean chicken and turkey, green tea, and spices. On the other hand, be sure to also keep red meat intake low.
  • Maintain a healthy body weight; obesity has been linked to breast cancer.
  • Say no to the cigarette (ALWAYS!!!) and keep alcohol intake at a minimum.

Nutrition

  • Vitamins A, E and D are all proven to help with cancer prevention. These could be obtained through pill forms of the vitamin or through consumption of certain foods.
  • Fiber reduces estrogen levels and has been linked to slowing cancer growth (as if we didn’t have reason enough to get on the kale bandwagon).

Birth Control

  • This little pill not only aids with pregnancy prevention, but also makes periods far more bearable and is linked to helping prevent ovarian, uteran, and colorectal cancer. Talk about good things coming in small packages.

Environment

  • Exposure to certain chemicals can increase your risk of breast cancer, along with other forms of cancer. Be aware of your environment, grab your girlfriends, and go out and take action to eliminate anything that could harm your health. This month is the perfect time to start!
