I don’t know when I started thinking myself as a geek, but I have feeling that I have known it since I was born. While many people would wear it as a badge of shame or consider it a curse, I have learned to embrace it. If it is a part of who I am, why not?
So, here it is.
I am a geek, and I am proud of it.
Before I begin explaining why I am a geek, I would like to clarify that I am not a nerd. While I do share some similar tendencies, I tend to lie more in the geek category. See the diagram below.

I may look fairly normal on the outside. I am pretty sure that if the inside reflected the outside, people would not recognize me. Instead of a red-haired girl with pale skin and green eyes, I might end up being a weird mixture of all different fictional characters (like Elizabeth Bennett, Dr. Holly Marten, and Dr. Temperance Brennan) thrown together with some people from history (like a Viking!).
This may be slightly confusing. People aren’t simple, and geeks are no different. There are different types of geeks, but I notice that I don’t even fit into one specific category. While I probably am mostly a History Geek, I do fit into other categories, like Book Geek, Pop Culture Geek, Film Geek, and Music Geek.

Anyways, because I like lists and organization, which is funny because my room is in a perpetual state of organized chaos, here are 5 of the many reasons as to why I am a geek.
1. I would probably fit into any number of pop culture geek groups.
From the guys of the Big Bang Theory to the town of Eureka to Arthur and his friends, I would probably fit right in. My goal in life is to acquire at least two Master’s Degrees and a Doctorate, which might gain me admittance to the group in the Big Bang Theory and Eureka. (As to whether Sheldon would accept any of them, that’s up for debate. I would have to try to rationalize with him, and who knows if that would work? The town of Eureka would be much more welcoming. But I digress…) When I was in elementary school, I was a combo of Fern, Arthur, and Francine, so I would have fit into their friend group. If only there was a way to transport myself into those worlds…. I must think on that.
2. I am extremely passionate about History, Archaeology, Osteoarchaeology, and Historic Forensic Anthropology.
Whenever I read a book or an article about any of these subjects, I am practically jumping up and down. I absolutely love what I am studying, and I cannot wait to study them even more in the future. They are all so interesting! The Medieval time period (especially Early Medieval, but I like Late Medieval too) is so fascinating that I could literally spend my whole day wrapped up learning. When I found out that a medieval knight had been found underneath the parking lot in Greyfriar’s Kirkyard in Edinburgh, Scotland, I was literally over the moon. I could talk about this for hours, but I am going to stop myself. I don’t want you to get bored before you finish the article.

3. I am a bibliophile, a massive bibliophile.
Even when I was a wee girl, I loved to read. (Think the previous sentence in a Scottish accent because it’s just awesome.) During every break, I read at least three to four books. I would even read during the school year, but homework eats a fair amount of my reading capacity. (Not that that is a problem. :) ) Whenever I walk into a bookstore (especially a used bookstore), I have trouble walking out of there without buying at least one book. Books are my addiction (like coffee and bread), which as far as addictions go is not that bad of a thing.
4. I love Sci-Fi and Fantasy!
Whether it is Indiana Jones, Space Janitors (which can be watched on Geek and Sundry), or Grimm, I love sci-fi and fantasy movies, TV shows, and books. While I do admit that I can get obsessed and wish that I lived there, they make life a little more fantastical and fun. While I have never gotten into Dungeons and Dragons or Twilight, I still consider myself a huge fan liking books, such as A Discovery of Witches, TV shows like Warehouse 13, and movies like Dragonheart.
5. I quote Movies and TV shows probably too much.
Multiple times a day, I have movie quotes go through my head that either apply to a situation that I am currently in or are funny, yet completely random. From Finding Nemo to Galaxy Quest, I have memorized (though not on purpose) nearly the entire script. I love it especially when you are having a conversation with someone and when you say a quote; they know exactly what you are referencing. “It’s just like magic!”

Being a geek is not something to be embarrassed about. Stand up, be proud, and show the world, who you truly are. I know I do, and I am proud to say that I, Danica Ramsey-Brimberg, am a geek.
(For those of you who did not understand the quote, it is said by Professor Lockheart towards the end of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets movie.)
