Steve Rosenfield started the What I Be Project in 2010 after realizing that he wanted to “do something with [his] passion that had more meaning.” By having people write their insecurities somewhere on their body, they are able to share their insecurities without having to show them. The project has seen the participation of people from many different stages and walks of life, from high school students to celebrities. Today, it is empowering millions of people globally to address their insecurities.
I first learned about the project in 2012 when I came across an article about it in Origin Magazine. As someone who has struggled for most of her memorable life with insecurity, I was intrigued by the idea of “building security through insecurities.” Though I have not had the opportunity to participate in the project myself, I believe strongly in its value.
What many of you may not know is that this week UGBC’s Be Conscious is hosting the What I Be Project at BC campaign. Over the course of six days, 75 BC students have been given the opportunity to share their stories and expose their insecurities.
This is an invaluable opportunity for the BC community to learn more about some of the intimate struggles that our friends and colleagues are dealing with. We all have insecurities, but until we all feel safe enough to share them, many of these issues will continue to plague our community.
The project will be unveiled on Monday, October 6th in Devlin 008 at 8pm. I encourage all members of the community to stop by and show their support for those who courageously participated in this event. If you cannot make it, look only for the photos and stories.
