When Is It Socially Acceptable To Wear My Parka?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

The weather is colder, the night comes earlier, the leaves have fallen…it is now December and unfortunately, it is what I consider to be winter. Winter can be appealing to some and may even be the favorite season of a small, select group of unique individuals. However, for me, it is most appealing when I am looking out at the snow wrapped in a blanket from the comfort of my heated home. Don’t get me wrong, December has a lot of promising things to offer: the end of the semester, a month off from school, my birthday, and Christmas. It does, however, have a lot of uninviting characteristics such as the cramming of work before the semester ends, the nightmare of finals week, and the gruesomely cold weather.

I don’t know what’s worse: having to leave the comfort of my bed and being uncomfortably cold on the walk to my 9 AM chemistry class or studying for finals. Yes, there are a lot of classes to study for, let alone an entire semester’s worth of material and I may not know where to start, but at least I can do it someplace nice… someplace indoors.

So that brings me to my question: When can I bring out my puffy, warm, protecting coat that is taking up way too much closet space not to be of daily use? Or one of my many scarves that I had to sacrifice packing space for? If I am cold, I should be able to wear whatever kind of coat, no matter how big, whenever I want. Am I supposed to suffer through the harsh wind chill and low temperature of 4 degrees Celsius as I walk back from lab at 8:30 at night just because it isn’t considered cold enough?

I know, I know. “Just wait, it gets worse.” It gets a lot worse which is why the use of parkas in early December is looked down upon. If I bring out my jacket now, people will assume I am from the South or California and once they ask and realize that I am not, they will see me as a fellow, weak Northeasterner which is definitely not acceptable.

In all honesty, I’m not exactly sure when the right time to sport your biggest coat to class is (if you thought I was going to answer that question in this article, I apologize), but all I know is, the first week of December is not it. So until then, my fingers will freeze, my ears will grow cold, and my body will become numb. All until one, brave individual makes the decision that today is the moment we have been waiting for. So, who’s it going to be?

Adrianna is a freshman majoring in psychology on a pre-med track at Boston College. She is really passionate about health and fitness and is trying to make it in Boston as a New York Sports fan. She can be found yelling at the TV a little too loudly when hockey is on, eating honey crisp apples, drooling over dylan o brien, or convincing people, that despite her 5'0 height, she is really 18 years old.
Emily Boches is currently a student at Boston College, majoring in Communications with a minor in Philosophy. She is also hoping to become a Veterinarian in the future. Emily is originally from Massachusetts, just 30 minutes outside of Boston. Her small city lies right on the coast where the beach is no more than 2 minutes away. She spends her free time getting addicted to shows on Netflix (it happens to the best of us), napping, and taking Buzzfeed quizzes.
