While You Were Out: This Week’s Top News

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

On Campus

The 2013 ALC Showdown took place on the night of Saturday, May 6th giving various BC dance groups the chance to show off their talents.  It was an amazing and well-fought competition, and all dancers brought their A-game.  The first place winner of the dance portion was Phaymus, the Hip Hop dance group at BC.  Aero K won the cultural portion of the competition.  Congratulations to these two teams as well as to all of the other incredible dancers!  Can’t wait to see what next year’s Showdown will bring!

National

Winter is still in full effect in some parts of the country!  This past week the Midwest and the South suffered from a powerful storm.  Lots of rain and snow fell in the Midwest, and the South even faced tornadoes.  Thankfully, Boston seems to be moving right into spring!

Global

Tensions are still high regarding North Korea and its threat to test launch a nuclear missile at the United States.  Secretary of State, John Kerry, is currently in South Korea working on lessening this threat and making it known that it would be a “huge mistake” for North Korea to take such an action.  Thankfully, many analysts report that the U.S. is definitely capable of stopping any sort of nuclear arsenal from reaching our country and will be very prepared if the situation becomes more serious.

Margaret Thatcher, the “Iron Lady” and only woman to have held the position of Prime Minister of the UK, passed away on April 8th.  The conservative Ms. Thatcher was known for being very strict in her beliefs and leadership philosophy.  She was beloved by many, but not all.  Still, she made undeniable progress in regard to women in the political realm, and her death marks the end of an era.

And that is this week’s top news!
