With a shortened week and the end of the semester closely approaching, I am sure that we were all busy this week. In case you missed some of the big headlines this week, Her Campus BC is here to catch you up. Check out here some top headlines from this week’s news.
Kid Gets Free Ride to Hawaii?
On Sunday, a 15-year old boy from Santa Clara, California survived the nearly impossible. He flew from San Jose to Maui Hawaii in the jetliner’s wheel well, which meant that he endured freezing temperatures and an extreme lack of oxygen at 38,000 feet in the air. He was discovered on the tarmac at the Maui airport. Although he was lucky to be alive it raises question of the security of airports. By simply hopping the fence at the San Jose airport, after running away from home, the FBI and Transportation authority are examining security measures to prevent this from happening again. We all know airline ticket prices are expensive, but let us all learn a lesson of safety that this is not the best means to get away.Â
Secretary of State, John Kerry, to Speak at BC Class of 2014 Commencement
After much anticipation, it was finally announced late Wednesday night that our Class of 2014 would have John Kerry as their commencement speaker on May 19th. It will be an honor to have current Secretary of State, Boston College Law School graduate and former senior US senator from Massachusetts at the 138th Boston College commencement before the 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students who will receive their degrees before family and friends. Noted as one of America’s most eminent senior statesman, John Kerry will also receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the ceremony from university President William P. Leahy, SJ during the ceremony. As a current senior, I look forward to hearing the wise words from such a respected statesman (and BC hockey fan) while wearing my cap and gown.

Bruins Beat Red Wings in Game 5! Next up: 2nd Round of Playoffs Against Montreal
After a loss in their first game of the series, the Boston Bruins came back strong winning four straight games against the Detroit Red Wings during the first round of the NHL playoffs. On a rainy Saturday afternoon, the defending Eastern Conference champs beat the Red Wings 4-2 at home; needless to say, TD Garden was pumped! With Tukka Rask in net and great goals by key players like Chara, Lucic and Erikkson, the Bruins were able to win the series 4-1. Next up, the B’s must face their heated rival, the Montreal Canadiens (who swept the Lightning in their first round series). Boston fans are anxious to see if our beloved B’s can repeat a 2011 victory when they won it all and claim the Stanley Cup yet again.
Two Popes Canonized
This Sunday, April 27th, both Pope John XXII and Pope John Paul II will be caoninized by Pope Francis in the first ever double caoninization. Both men have helped to modernize the Catholic Church, and as a result many people have controversial feelings about this double sainthood so soon after their reign as pope. Regardless, millions are flocking to the Vatican for this historic event, and these men are both memorable. Despite Pope John XXII only performing one miracle instead of the long held prerequiste to perform two miracles to be canonized, Pope Francis basically responded “Says who? I’m the Pope.” And even though Pope Jogn XXII only performed one miracle, he convened the Second Vatican Council to modernize a seemingly anachronistic institution and that is quite a remarkable accomplishment. The canonization will be live streamed for all of us to watch this memorable moment in the history of Roman Catholics.
We hope you all now feel more in the know! Hope you all have an incredible week that is worthy of headlines, in a good way.
